University Online Writing Lab (OWL): http://owl.english.purdue.edu Prerequisite: English 1301 and have met Texas Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading and Writing Course Description: Engl 1302 Composition II (3) In this course students refine the writing, research, and reading skills introduced in English 1301. A related goal is the development of critical thinking skills. Writing assignments emphasize argumentation and persuasion. Students will also write a formal research paper. (3 Lec.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 230401535 English Program Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the English program at Eastfield College, students should be able to: 1) Critically read and analyze college-level material, including library and Internet resources 2) Compose academic prose that demonstrates a clear purpose, logical organization, and relevant support through evaluation and synthesis 3) Apply various strategies to locate, evaluate, and synthesize ideas for a range of writing tasks 4) Establish and maintain a clear, controlling idea that serves as a thesis/claim statement in an essay 5) Revise, edit, and proofread an essay for grammatical accuracy 6) Apply MLA style to essay format, in-text citations, and works cited documentation Course Evaluation and Expectations To be successful in this class, you need to • Complete all assignments on time • Take advantage of opportunities to rewrite your papers • Pay attention and participate (no net surfing, texting, etc. You will be warned once. The second infraction will result in your leaving the classroom and being counted absent. • Take notes• Inform me immediately of any difficulties preventing you from being successful in this class • BE IN CLASS, on time, with textbook and materials, prepared to participate and turn in assignments. Arriving to class late or leaving early is disrespectful to the instructor, unless there are extenuating circumstances. You need to inform me of these circumstances in advance. Please make arrangements to arrive on time and stay the entire class. After three absences, five points will be deducted from your final grade. Grades 5 Essays 50% (I will accept only 1 late paper, which will be due the next class. I will not accept any other late papers, and the grade for subsequent late essays will be a zero.) Group project and presentation 10% Research paper 20% Tests 10% Quizzes, class preparation and participation 10% (If you are absent, you cannot make up these grades) ______ 100% Grading Scale A = 90 --100 B = 80 -- 89 C = 71 -- 79 D = 60 -- 69 F = 0 -- 59 N = Non-attendance after the drop date (will affect the studentʼs ability to receive financial aid) Food and Drink You may bring drinks that have lids or tops, but keep them on the floor. If you need a snack, please step outside of the classroom to eat it. INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES DROP / WITHDRAWAL POLICY AND SEMESTER DROP DATE If you are unable to complete this course, it is your responsibility to withdraw. Withdrawing is a formal procedure which you must initiate; your instructor cannot do it for you. You must withdraw through the Admissions/Registrarʼs Office (C119) in person, by mail, or through eConnect by the DROP DATE. Failure to withdraw before the deadline will result in receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of “F.” You will receive a “W” (“Withdraw”) in each class dropped. A “W” shows up on your transcript but does NOT hurt your GPA. **THE DROP DATE FOR THIS CLASS IS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2011** ***STOP BEFORE YOUR DROP: THE 6 DROP RULE*** For students who enrolled in collge level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops, you cannot drop any other courses with a “W.” Therefore, please exercise caution when dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of the Dallas County Community Colleges. For more information, you may access: http://www1.dcccd.edu/coursedrops.DISTRICT THIRD ATTEMPT POLICY/REPEATING A COURSE Effective for Fall Semester 2005, the Dallas County Community Colleges will charge a higher tuition rate to students registering the third or subsequent time for a course. All third and subsequent attempts of the majority of credit and Continuing Education/Workforce Training courses will result in higher tuition to be charged. Developmental Studies and some other courses will not be charged a higher tuition rate. Third attempts include courses taken at any of the Dallas County Community Colleges since the Fall 2002 semester. FINANCIAL AID STATEMENT If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans, you must begin attendance in all classes. Do not withdraw or stop attending any class without first consulting the Financial Aid Office (C237). Non-attendance or withdrawals may affect your eligibility to receive further financial aid and could cause you to be in a position of repayment for the current semester.
