Course Prefix and Number: NUR 210 Course Name: Pharmacodynamics of Nursing Practice Credit Hours and Contact Hours: 3 credit hours – 3 contact hours Catalog Description including pre- and co-requisites: supporting data required for grade prerequisite of ‘C’ or higher. : A basic course designed to familiarize the learner with those groups of drugs frequently employed in the treatment of commonly occurring health problems. The course will include the study of drugs that affect the following body systems: nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hematopoietic, immune, and respiratory. Drugs utilized in the treatment of infections and cancer will also be studied. Course restricted to R. N.’s and senior level students enrolled in an R.N. program. L.P.N.s and any other students must secure permission of instructor or department chair to take this course. Relationship to Academic Programs and Curriculum including SUNY Gen Ed designation if applicable: This is a nursing elective course. It provides supplemental and complementary information to the nursing curriculum. II. Course Student Learning Outcomes: State the student learning outcome(s) for the course (e.g. Student will be able to identify…) The student at the end of the semester will be able to: 1. Describe the general framework of pharmacology. 2. Identify references and resources for obtaining current information regarding specific as well as categories of drugs. 3. State desired pharmacological action, side effects and nursing implications of prototype drugs within the following drug classifications: a. Antiinfectives b. Antiinflammatory agents c. Central nervous system stimulants and depressants d. Autonomic nervous system drugs e. Cardiac drugs f. Blood coagulants and anticoagulants g. Respiratory agents h. Diuretics i. Gastrointestinal agents j. Hormones k. Immunologic agents l. Antineoplastic agents2 m. Antiallergic agents n. Antipyretics o. Antihypertensive agents p. Antilepemics q. Vasodilators r. Thromboytic agents 4. Select appropriate nursing interventions to minimize the undesirable side effects of prototype drugs in each classification. 5. Instruct patients and/or families regarding their drug regimen to include action, dosage, pertinent side effects and adverse effects requiring reporting and/or prompt medical attention. Critical Thinking Completion of case studies, pre-tests and participation in class discussion will assess critical thinking. Computer Literacy Navigation of the software learning platform will assess computer literacy. Ethics/values Participation in class discussions and completion of case studies will assess ethics/values. Information Resources Completion of case studies, pre-tests, article project, interview project and participation in class discussions will assess information resources.3 IV. Instructional Materials and Methods Types of Course Materials: This course is taught online through the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) so student must have access to a computer. There is a required textbook for the course.
