Easel 5000 Week 4 February 15, 2006 Alison BierceviczWork Completed Research Additional LED options for colored LEDs were researched in the Mouser catalog. Reell Precision Manufacturing Corporation was researched for their ability to make a wide range and variety of friction hinges. Torque geared friction hinges were also looked into from Reell Corporation. Tamiya connectors for the battery hook up were found at a multiple of websites however with their extremely cheap price and the high cost of shipping it was found to be better to pick them up from Radio Shack. Radio Shack will also be investigated for other options to hold the battery. The budget was reviewed in order to keep the group on track for spending. Roughly $100 is left in the budget so now the group needs to be more conscious of spending. Luckily enough a majority of the parts have been purchased. All that remains are minor parts. Contacts Professor Northorp was again contacted to discuss dimming options for the LED circuit and for ideas on how to incorporate different colored LEDs into the system. Reell Corporation was contacted about receiving free samples of their hinges. Contact was made with Nicki Sobcincki from Reell and she coordinated the donation of three of their hinges to the project. Further contact was made with Patty Mitchell and she has informed our group of the type of surface Tom primarily works on. She informed us that Tom works on anything from 9”X36” sheets of thin metal to 8”X10” and 20”X24” canvases. LED System Dimming options for the circuit were explored. A 50K ohm resistor was inserted in the LM555 part of the circuit where the 22K ohm resistor was initially. When the system was tested with a range of resistor values on the potentiometer undesirable results were achieved. The adjustment on the potentiometer proved to be too coarse and didn’t dim much with adjustment. When adjusted down the LEDs could be seen with a visible flicker. Options for different potentiometer placement will bediscussed with Professor Northorp. The transistors were finally ordered in conjunction with the glucose group to save on shipping costs. 3.6 V100 ohms24 ma3.6 V324 876518.6 Kohms50Kohms51 Kohms.01 uf.01 ufLM5559 V100ohms LM555 Circuit Mounting optionPossible Place for Pot Dimming OptionFuture Work Next week the hinges should be received from Reell Corporation and options for incorporating it into the easel extension design will be explored. The ideas received from Northorp on the LED system will be applied and tested. LEDs will be panel mounted on a board and wiring will be tested. Also options for mounting Tom’s art surfaces will be discussed. Patty Mitchell will again be contacted to see what kind of surfaces Tom works on now so we can better pin point improvements to it. Project Review We are on good track for the beginning of the semester. We have researched the proper topics and are making good steps forth on design. The parts for construction have arrived and machining has begun. A problem has arisen with one the information on Tom’s work surfaces. This will be sorted through an options will be discussed. The initial construction should be finished next week or the week after to leave time to complete another design or improve on the current Hours Worked 13
