Course Competencies: The student will be able to perform on a "novice" level, as defined by ACTFL Guidelines and SCANS, which are on file with the Dean at South Plains College in Levelland, TX. Learning Objectives: The main objective of SPAN 1512 is for students to review the basic building blocks of the Spanish language in order to function in real communication situations in a halting way. The superior student will be able to do so with quite a bit of “fluency.” The student will continue to gain a basic working vocabulary and grammar in the indicative and imperative moods, concentrating on the present and past tenses, and acquire a vocabulary of approximately 1000 words. The student will continue to develop an awareness of different Hispanic cultures and history in different countries. The student will continue to develop abilities in all four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Assignments: Assignments are to be prepared before class. Each assignment will be due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated and will not accepted late. Assignments will include readings and textbook exercises (oral and written), supplementary worksheets, compositions, the Online Quia Workbook, the ActivityPak and/or other activities designed to stimulate and reinforce foreign language acquisition. Please prepare your assignments carefully and expect to participate in class. On average you should study an amount of time equal to that spent in class. Do not send any assignments via e-mail and do not put them in my mailbox or slide them under my office door. Assignments will not be accepted incomplete. This class will therefore be taught in Spanish, and students are also required to interact with their peers and the instructor in Spanish. This method is highly effective. Research has proven that this is the best way to study a second language. You can only learn it by being exposed to it sufficiently and using it for real communication, so that you can develop your own communicative ability. If you are confused and need some help in English, you can see me, your instructor, during my office hours. Do not try to disrupt the class and ask to be spoken to in English. Oral Evaluations: There will be two (2) oral evaluations in this course. The two orals will count as 15% of your overall course average. Please arrive on time to be able to take each of your evaluations. In each assessment you will engage in simulated or real conversations. In those conversations you will be asked to perform speaking tasks of varying difficulty such as talking about a picture or responding to questions. Listening Comprehension Evaluations: There will be a total of two (2) Listening Comprehension evaluations which will be included as part of the Midterm Exam as well as the Final Exam in this course. Please arrive on time to be able to take each evaluation. The goal is to determine your ability to understand spoken Spanish. Midterm Examination: The Midterm Examination will be in 6 parts: Listening Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Cultura (based on the Sol y viento videos and the Vistazos culturales sections of the textbook), and a Composition. Final Examination: The Final Exam will also be in 6 parts: Listening Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Cultura (based on the Sol y viento videos and the Vistazos culturales sections of the textbook), and a Composition. Final Examination Date and Time: Friday, December 9, 2011, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in room FL1. SPAN1512 will NOT be part of the Spanish Common Final. Please note: Participating in the Final Exam is an integral and important part of this course. Please see the section below, under "Policies," which explains absence policies. If for some reason you will be unable to participate in the final due to a travel or time conflict, you should consider your priorities now. You will be expected to take the Final Examination at its scheduled time and place. You will not be permitted to take the Final Examination earlier than the scheduled time. Compositions: Will be done by each student alone, with the help of the book, class notes, and/or a dictionary. A student may NOT get any help from any outside sources whatsoever: not from his/her instructor, nor his/her friends or family, nor his/her athletic tutors or other tutors, nor any online translation services. However, students are encouraged to go over the instructor‟s comments on their graded compositions with outside sources to learn from them; this may include consultation with the instructor, knowledgeable family and/or friends, and
