Curtis Architecture After Modernism D. Ghirardo Course Objectives: Develop an understanding and become conversant in the history and sources of modern architecture. The time frame begins in 1945 and continues through present day. The root of architectural theory is derived from the history of the art. As such, a thorough understanding of history is the cornerstone to understanding and working with architectural theory.Major topics to be covered: World architecture of the 20th century from1945 through 2001. Various periods of architecture will be covered: Brutalismthe International Style, Modernism and Post Modernism. In addition,architects will be presented that include: Mies van der Rohe, Frank LloydWright, LeCorbusier, Venturi, I.M. Pei, Piano and Rogers, Kahn, Botta, Foster, Eisenman, Koolhaas and others. In addition, various movements, sub-periods and personalities will be discussed.Calendar/Topics: The class will receive visual information (slidesand projections), along with lecture and discussion. An extra credit assignment may be added.Attendance: "Students are expected to attend all sessions of each class. Instructors may drop students from the class if they fail to attend the first class meeting, or when accumulated unexcused hours of absences exceed ten percent of the total number of hours the class meets during the semester. Moreover, an instructor may drop from theclass any student who fails to attend one class session during the first three weeks of instruction." The point is that your attendance is important and necessary to obtain an understanding of the subject matter and a reasonable grade.All work for grade shall be the sole work of the student receiving the grade.Last day to drop without a "W" is 02/20.
