PSYC 1100 1nd Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Last Lecture I N A Outline of Current Lecture I Brain Fundamentals a Grammatical Rules b Real vs Made up Words c Vision Current Lecture I Brain Fundamentals a Grammatical Rules Our brain contains sets of grammatical rules that are second nature to us For example we automatically know that I m gonna school is not in the proper tense however I m gonna work makes sense b Real vs Made up Words The brain automatically knows the difference between real vs made up words For example we can determine that guitar is a word and bynarf is not The speed at which our brain determines the validity of a word depends on how common the word is and how often we hear it For instance if asked if happy is a word we can immediately say yes because it is used in everyday conversation If asked if ardent is a word our brain will take slightly longer to answer because it is not used as often as happy is c Vision Our brain physically sees things differently depending on the context Two things can be the exact same but look different when surrounded by different backgrounds For example looking at the figure below the small square on the left looks to be lighter than the others and get gradually darker as you move to the right however in reality all small squares are the exact same shade of grey Our brain only perceives them as different shades because the shades of the boarders surrounding each small square are different These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute
