Assignments for Elementary Science1. Science Lesson NotebookCreate a set of lessons that demonstrate the following:Teaching specific content in each area:- Life Science- Physical Science- Earth Science- Space Science- HIV/Sexual Health- Evolution/CreationismApplication of the following teaching strategies:- Pre, guided, post reading strategies to social studies textbook reading- Specific observation and inquiry skills - How to collect and organize data: graphs, charts - Graphic organizers- Children’s literature- Youtube video (or other streaming video) with pre, guided, and post viewing activities- Science Journaling - Internet site(s) with specific guided activities constructed- Culturally Relevant PedagogyALL Lessons must include:- Title- Grade Level- Time/Length- State PE (Performance Expectations)- Objective- Materials/Resources needed (including text citations, website addresses, etc.)- Procedures- Assessment tools and criteria (i.e, rubrics based on performance expectations)Be prepared to bring drafts of these lessons in weekly to share with your peers.2. Science Websites- Create a WEBPAGE of 25 links that includes 5 websites in each of the 5 areas –(life, physical, earth, space, HIV/Sexual Health). Make sure for each subset you have a distribution of sites suitable for primary and upper grade levels. These sites should have information for use by students (so NOT lesson plan sites for teachers to be using)- Create a linked List of general information research sites students may use for researching facts and information- For each site, provide a summary of the site as well as grade level designation, and critique of strengths and weaknessesSite Link SummaryGrade LevelCritiqueStrengths:Weaknesses:- Be prepared to bring in these sites weekly to share with your peers3. Unit Plan for Adapted FOSS- Working with a partner or alone, choose one of the FOSS Units from Elementary or Middle Level- Deconstruct the skills/knowledge needed to be taught (make a list)- Design a unit of study (Multiple lessons over time) to teach the skills/knowledge needed- Create a list of 20 websites to be used with the unit (make sure all are age appropriate to the grade level being taught)- All to be assembled and linked on your webpage4. Weekly Articles- Each week you will bring in a current article based on the week’s topic to share with your group. You need to have read the article, and written down some ideas, ways in which you could use the article for making curricular connections. Include relevant performance expectations and lesson ideas (no need for formal lesson plans—just written brainstormed ideas). Both the article AND your written applications should be included in the final notebook5. In class groups- You will be in an assigned group for the quarter- Each week you will be responsible to bring 1) weekly topic article, 2) drafts of lessons, 3) websites and critiques to your group to share- Each week you and your peers will fill out an evaluation sheet for your preparation and contribution to the group
