What is my culture Exercise? (15-20 minutes in class)Script (italic text indicates instruction and information for the instructors)There are many different aspects to each of us. We are all part of many different groups and have many different layers to our identity. Some of those groups or identities are very important to us; some are less important. I would like all of you to stand up, leave your books and belongings where they are and be ready to move around the class room. I will call different groups and you will join the groups that you think best describe you.Let’s start with some easier ones:(make light comments about each grouping; for example you may have more females than males; all dark haired people; people having trouble deciding whether or not they are single; keep it light and appropriate)- Male and female- Light and dark hair (you decide what you are! We don’t care about cosmetic decisions you may have made!)- Single; not single- Full time student; part-time student- Type of music: country, rap, alternative, pop, techno, classical….- Hobbies: playing sports, watching sports, cooking, reading…Which of these really define you? Or do they? Why or why not?(allow a couple minutes of feedback and discussion)Now for some more complex ones:- Let’s do race and/or ethnicity: White; African American; Asian; Hispanic (which is not a race but an ethnicity); and other (not to “dis” the other group but chances are they are a small group here)- How about religion: Christian; Jewish; Muslim; other faiths; no religion?o Do we need further and finer distinctions? You can create you owngroup- How about national origins? Let’s go by continent: Europe; Asian; African;the Americaso Do we need finer distinction(keep track of how people move within these 3 groupings; several students are likely to have moved from one group to another making them be with different people in each of the groups)Do any of these groupings define you more closely? ASU 101: The ASU Experience Arizona State UniversitySeveral you have moved into the groups with new people. Although there may be some patterns, the groups were not stable. Each of you belong to different groups. If I forced you to pick one that best define you, which one would it be? Can you pick one easily? Why or why not?(use student responses to show how some people feel closely defined by their race or gender and others may not? Discuss why it matters: for example, although being “white female” may not be a big deal to someone, their religion may matter more, the race may be a big deal for others around that person. That may be how others define the person.)(ask students to suggest other groupings that are meaningful to them; groupings that may or may not be obvious. For example being a basketball player, or a single parent may be key to someone’s identity)Summary points (on power point slide)- We are all defined by many different group and personal characteristics- Some of those characteristics, such as skin color are predominant, at leastto others, if not for us- Each of us has many diverse groups or identities within us- Classify people based on only one dimension misses the richness of individuals and limits us and themASU 101: The ASU Experience Page
