The six-hour course will utilize mini lectures, discussions, group work, peer editing, and campus resources and activities to enhance student learning. Please note that students receive the same grade in both courses; therefore, if students withdraw from the learning community, they MUST withdraw from both courses. Developmental Writing: DWRI 0093 (3 credit hours) This course focuses specifically on the writing process. Course topics include inventing, drafting, revising, and editing multi-paragraph papers. Course activities will be designed to improve your reading skills, develop your thinking skills, improve your research skills, and improve your attitude toward the writing process. Exercises will be designed to give guidance and practice in sentence structure, paragraph building, and essay construction. Opportunities will be provided to test and refine skills and to apply these skills to your own work. Learning laboratories are located on campus to provide additional assistance. English 1301: Composition I (3 credit hours) This course focuses on student writing. It emphasizes reading and analytical thinking and introduces research skills. Life is So Good ISBN: 13: 9780141001685 REQUIRED MATERIALS: Binder, dividers, blue or black pen, highlighter, a flash drive, and any good paperback dictionary DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES: The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a statewide program designed to ensure that students enrolled in Texas public colleges and universities have the basic academic skills needed to be successful in college-level course work. The TSI requires assessment, remediation (if necessary), and advising of students who attend a public college or university in the state of Texas. The program assesses a student’s basic academic skills in reading, writing, and math. Passing the assessment is a prerequisite for enrollment in many college-level classes such as English 1301/1302, History 1301/1302, Math 1414, etc. Students who do not meet assessment standards may complete prerequisite requirements by taking developmental courses in the deficient area and passing them with a grade of C or higher. In some cases retesting will also be required. It is up to each student to be aware and informed about requirements that are subject to change. EXEMPLARY EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1. To understand and demonstrate writing and speaking processes through invention, organization, drafting, revising, editing, and presenting 2. To understand the importance of specifying audience and purpose and to select appropriate communication choices 3. To understand and appropriately apply modes of expression, such as descriptive, expositive, narrative, scientific, and self-expressive, in written, visual, and oral communication 4. To participant effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding 5. To understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking, problem solving, and technical proficiency in the development of exposition and argument3 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of the English Program at Eastfield College, students should be able to do the following: - Critically read and analyze college-level material - Compose academic prose with a clear purpose and effective, logical, and relevant support - Apply various strategies to locate, evaluate, and synthesize ideas for a range of writing tasks - Establish and maintain a clear controlling idea that serves as a thesis/claim statement in an essay - Develop an essay that employs convincing evidence resulting in a sequence of effective and organized paragraphs - Compose effective, grammatically sound sentences - Use the library and Internet as tools to locate and assess college-level reading materials - Apply MLA format and style to cite sources within an essay - Successfully revise, edit, and proofread an essay - Compose an essay applying computer-based technology - Demonstrate effective participation in a collaborative activity GRADING SCALE: A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79 *69 and below = F *Students who are not demonstrating a proficient knowledge of ENGL 1301 skills will have an option to lateral into a DWRI 0093 class. Students who choose not to lateral into DWRI 0093 may receive a failing grade in ENGL 1301 and DWRI 0093.
