Economics 302 Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory Fall 2008 Instructor Jiao Shi Lecture 11 00 12 15 TR 165 Bascom Hall Office 6460 Social Science Email jiaoshi wisc edu Tel 608 263 3871 Office Hours 9 00AM 10 00AM Tuesday 1 00PM 2 00PM Thursday Course Webpage https mywebspace wisc edu jiaoshi web econ302 htm Course Overview The course is designed to develop a structural understanding of the economy as a whole We study the behaviors of the economy in the very long run in the long run and in the short run and discuss effectiveness of macroeconomic policies in these time horizons Requirements and Grading There will be 3 exams including a cumulative final exam and 4 6 homework in this semester All of them count toward your final grade according to Homework 10 Exam 1 25 Exam 2 25 Final Exam 40 The final letter grade depends on your relative standing compared to the rest of the class Highest 20 A 30 20 AB 60 30 B 75 60 BC 95 75 C Below 95 D F Exams Dates Exam 1 October 9th Thursday in class Exam 2 November 20th Thursday in class Final Exam December 16th Tuesday place TBA Make up Exam and Homework Policy NO MAKEUP EXAM will be given for the midterms If you miss one midterm due to factors BEYOND YOUR CONTROL the other midterm and the final will be re weighted to determine your grade A MAKEUP EXAM WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE FINAL EXAM ONLY IN EXCEPTIONAL CASES Late homework assignment will NOT be accepted Discussion Sections Attendance to the discussion section is highly recommended Discussion sections will cover practice problems related to the material from the lecture You can switch discussion sections only if your TA and the TA you transfer to both agree If you need to transfer to another section and you have a valid reason talk to your TA Grading Complaints If you have a complaint about a grade see your TA If you still feel an error was made type a letter describing the complaint the grade you received the grade you think you deserve and hand in this complaint to me Your homework exam can be re graded Note that the revised grade may turn out higher or lower as other grading mistakes may be detected in this process Topic Coverage Part I Introduction 1 Overview of Macroeconomics 2 The Data of Macroeconomics the National Income Accounting Part II Production and Growth 3 The Production Function Factors of Production and Distribution 4 The Economic Growth Capital and Population Growth 5 The Economic Growth Technological Progress Part III Classical Theory the Economy in the Long Run 6 National Income 7 Money and Inflation 8 The Open Economy Trade and Exchange Rate 9 Unemployment Part IV Business Cycle and Stabilization Policy the Economy in the Short Run 10 Economic Fluctuations and a First Look at the Aggregate Demand Supply 11 The IS LM Model 12 Fiscal and Monetary Policies and the IS LM Model 13 The Open Economy Revisited 14 Inflation and Unemployment in the Short Run Part V Macroeconomic Policy Debate If Time Permits 15 Stabilization Policy 16 Government Debt
