PSY 101: Introduction to Psychology (Fall 2014, Section 003H) Objectives: Survey data, theory, and methods from the study of behavior and mental processes. Time and place: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:40pm-2:30pm, 111 Olds Hall 300 Human Ecology (as of 9/16) Instructor: Dr. Erik Altmann ([email protected]; please include “PSY 101” in Subject line) Office hours: Fridays 11:30am-1:30pm, Psychology Building 298A. Textbook: Gleitman, Reisberg, and Gross. Psychology (8th edition), W.W. Norton. The 8th edition is required. A copy is on reserve in the library. Course webpage: http://www.msu.edu/~ema/psy101/ Scores and grades: Exams (175 points): There will be three exams. Exams 1 and 2 are each worth 50 points. Exam 3 is worth 75 points and will be cumulative. Exam dates appear in the Course Schedule, below. The format will be a mix of multiple-choice and short-answer. Any material covered in class or in the readings listed in the Course Schedule could appear on an exam. Paper (15 points): There will be one short paper due in class on the last regular class day (see the Course Schedule). Requirements, grading criteria, and a sample paper are posted on the Course Webpage. Research participation (10 points): You will receive 1 point for each 1/2-hour credit of participation in research being conducted in the Psychology Department, up to a total of 10 points (5 hours). Instructions for how to register with the HPR system and sign up for studies are posted on the Course Webpage. For all questions about the HPR systm, please contact the Research Participation Coordinator, Ms. Leslie Baldwin ([email protected]). In lieu of research participation, you may write a separate paper; contact the instructor for details, no later than the date of Exam 2. There will be no extra credit options. Your grade in the course will be based on your final score out of 200 and the following scale: Final score: 0-95 96-110 111-120 121-135 136-150 151-165 166-180 181-200 Grade: 0.0 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5 4.0 Students who violate academic integrity as defined in Spartan Life may receive a penalty grade, such as a score of 0 on an exam or a failing grade in the course. Emergencies and schedule conflicts: You may take a makeup exam in case of a documented medical emergency or a schedule conflict that you know about in advance, such as a religious holiday or sports travel. In either case, please notify the instructor as soon as practical in case of an emergency and at least a week in advance of exam day in case of a schedule conflict. If you miss an exam for any other reason, or fail to notify the instructor in advance in case of a schedule conflict, you should expect a score of 0 on that exam.Makeup exams will usually be held the day after the regular exam day. If you are not able to take a makeup on that day, then, at the instructor’s discretion, that exam may be omitted from your final score and those points distributed over the other exams.
