Management Process Theory Time and Place of Class Meetings Monday Thursday 1 00 pm 3 00 pm from 6 6 2011 7 7 2011 in the College of Business Administration Building Room 152 Description of Course Content Fundamentals of the management process principles and techniques for all organizations The basic functions of management planning organizing directing and controlling Social responsibilities political influences and ethical considerations as they affect the management of organizations Coverage of strategic human resources business strategy communications managing diversity firm structure and decision making in terms of management activities Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course students will be able to 1 List and define the four components of management 2 Identify define and apply generic business level strategies 3 List and define theories of behavior that guide the management of behavior and outcomes 4 Accurately list and explain in own words at least 4 management perspectives 5 List and define various types of leadership styles 6 Compare and contrast theories in leadership and leadership styles 7 Be able to identify and put into practice at least three different leadership styles 8 Define and explain Corporate Social Responsibility 9 Identify unethical behavior in the workplace and explain the importance of business ethics 10 Be able to list and define the laws that protect women and minorities in the workplace 11 Apply accepted management principles to problem solve for real world business scenarios demonstrated by case study exercises 12 Present topics in management and solutions via slide show presentation Required Textbook and materials 1 Gomez Mejia L R Balkin D B Cardy R L 2008 Management People Performance Change 3rd ed New York McGraw Hill Irwin Other course materials and readings will be provided by the instructor Descriptions of major assignments with due dates Assigned materials are to be read or completed prior to class and you must be prepared to participate in class discussion Please turn off all cell phones and pagers before class begins Please do not use your laptop for e mailing games or other non course related activities during class Course Assignments Final Team Project Mandatory assignment due beginning Wednesday July 6 2011 You and your assigned group will search for newspaper and reputable magazine articles on a business that is undergoing a major change or challenge Your job will be to present the business and pose possible solutions for the business using strategies you learned in class and from the text A rubric for the team and individual members is attached as a guideline for what is expected Dress professionally and pretend as if you are presenting to the board of directors of the company Please email me your presentation the day before you present A presentation of about 10 15 minutes will be due along with copies of articles used and a list of references You may select from the following list of companies Walmart Facebook Blockbuster Google Ford Toyota General Motors Netflix Kmart Sears Six Flags Ebay Interview Assignment Extra credit worth 5 points Extra credit due before 7 7 11 Instructions must be followed to receive extra credit Students are to locate a manager or supervisor that oversees a minimum of 2 people You may not interview yourself Ask if you may talk with them for about 30 to 40 minutes for a course assignment Be prepared and be professional If doing the assignment in person be sure to dress professionally The first page of the report should be a cover page with your name on it the name of the assignment interview assignment and the date on it Put the following mandatory items in the following numbered fashion on the second page of your report 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Name of interviewee Title of interviewee Company for which the person works Phone number or contact information for the person Length of time in the position Previous relevant work experience for the interviewee Education training or certifications For items 8 9 and 10 develop your own questions for the interviewee You may wish to ask how she or he entered the management field what are the key challenges they face in their position what is the most interesting or unusual management situation they have encountered what concerns they see in the current workforce what recommendations they would make for someone trying to get a job how important are grades in obtaining a job what kinds of training are regularly provided for him or her in their current position or what kinds of training are regularly provided for his or her employees what does the person wish she or he had known in his or her first job what are key challenges or opportunities they foresee in the near future etc Unique and worthwhile questions may receive extra credit List the question you are asking and number those items in your report as 8 9 and 10 etc In addition to reporting what the interviewee said you need to integrate it with course material Put the names of the course concepts and the page s where the material is discussed in italics below each item For example Relevant course material We discussed xyz on page 123 of chapter What the interviewee said is directly supportive of the course materials She does abc and what the interviewee said is similar to or This contradicts with Note This can be a very fun and worthwhile assignment You may even find this an opportunity to be hired as an intern which may lead to a full time position at that company Be sure to be professional in all of your communications Additional Extra Credit Assignments There are 2 opportunities to earn additional extra credit by preparing a written assignment on 2 films one which will be watched in class only if time permits The titles of the films are The Smartest Guys in the Room and Office Space Each assignment will be worth 5 points each The assignment should be no longer than 2 pages typed double spaced using 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font Your goal is to not summarize the movie but to 1 identify a challenges and or poor
