Seminar AssignmentsSeminar AssignmentsSeminars are scheduled on Wednesdays from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. During weeks 3 and 4 this time will be used for additional Kinetics and/or Quantum lectures. The topic focus ofseminar will be centered around weapons of mass destruction with the expectation that concepts from our study of scientific ethics will add depth to our work. All submitted assignments should be typed. Seminar assignments # 8 and # 9 are due on the Wednesday following your assigned time. (Any week 3 submissions must be done at Rebecca’s office or mailbox.)Seminar Assignment # 1 (due 1-18, week 2)Read chapters 1-5 of Building the Bomb. Create a combined event timeline for these chapters. Select an event that surprised you, jumped out at you, caught yourattention, etc., and write two paragraphs about this event. The first paragraph should descibe the event and the second paragraph should describe or explain your reaction.Seminar Assignment # 2 (due 2-8, week 5)Read chapters 6-end of Building the Bomb and type up a discussion question that you feel should be used during seminar to initiate conversations. (There may be a short reading assessment at the beginning of seminar time.)Seminar Assignment # 3 (due 2-15, week 6)Read chapters 1-5 of Undue Risk and prepare a two-three page—double spaced, size 12 font—paper selected from one of the three options below. It is essential that quotations from the text be used to support your statements. OPTION 1: Using supporting quotations from both Undue Risk and The Ethical Chemist elaborate on the scientific ethics involved in the Nuremberg trial. OPTION 2: Using supporting quotations from the text discuss the role of politics—war, political leader policies, etc.—in human subject testing. OPTION 3: Select a focus of your choice to demonstrate your comprehension of the text and your ability to incorporate supporting quotations in your writing.Seminar Assignment # 4 (due 2-22, week 7)Read chapters 6-end of Undue Risk and prepare a two-three page—double spaced, size 12 font—paper addressing the question, “How has human subject testing evolved over the course of time?” Use quotations from the text to support your ideas.Seminar Assignment # 5 (due 3-1, week 8)Read chapters 1-8 of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Locate two additional resources addressing a topic of interest discussed by the text. Bring reference information for your resources and be ready to discuss your findings.Seminar Assignment # 6 (due 3-8, week 9)Read chapter 9 of Weapons of Mass Destruction and take notes as you go. There will be a short, open-note, quiz at the beginning of seminar. (Your notes must be handwritten.) Seminar Assignment # 7 (due 3-15, week 10)Read chapter 10 of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Select either a biological agentor a related concept from the text and locate an additional outside reference addressing the agent or concept. Be ready to discuss your findings.Seminar Assignment # 8 (due , week )Take notes during your small group session of seminar. Be certain that no more than one note taker is in each small group. Include in these notes who was present, who did the talking, and what items were discussed. Shortly after seminar ends write one or two paragraphs describing the small group dynamics you observed.
