Murray State University DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES SYLLABUS FRE 324 I. TITLE: French Civilization (II) II. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Survey of French Civilization II III. PURPOSE: Study and analysis of French civilization for enhanced appreciation of French culture, history, literature and thought. IV. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the course are: a) to acquire a solid knowledge and appreciation of French culture from the beginnings to the Revolution. b) to possess an wider vocabulary pertaining to specific literary and historical contexts as well as passive knowledge of additional vocabulary. c) to express yourself in writing advanced French. d) to be able to read a variety of texts and critical approaches. e) to speak French with greater fluency f) to improve your understanding of the grammar, structure and vocabulary of French g) to improve interpersonal communication skills in French. h) to increase and refine your awareness of and appreciation of French culture & history. V. CONTENT OUTLINE: Six dossiers covering a survey of geography and history, key personalities, topics ranging from the transition from monarchy to republic, the evolution of society, the history of ideas and the main literary and artistic movements, with questions, texts, illustrations and activities. VI. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES: Students are expected to spend at least two hours preparing for every class period: i.e. read the text and introduction to the text and answer questions. Each dossier will end with a esponse paper on the reading material. For smooth and effective work, please hand assignments on time. Late assignments cannot be accepted except by prior arrangement. No credit will be given for assignments turned in late. VII. FIELD AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCES: See VIII. RESOURCES. VIII. RESOURCES: Resources include the Waterfield Lib, the Language and Culture Lab (FAC Room 403) for videos and the course web site; Students are strongly recommended to take part in conversations in French outside of class (French Table), watch French movies and attend French and other international films shown in the course of the semester.IX. GRADING PROCEDURES: The course grade will be comprised of: 40% Response papers (4 written short papers, after each dossier) 50% Oral skills evaluation, presence (*): sharing short research in class (class-presentation) 10% Final exam (*)Being prepared for every class and taking an active part in class activities is essential X. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. Absences will affect your grade. AN ABSENCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR BEING UNPREPARED.
