Show artist examples of still life a. J.D. Hillberryb. Barbara Sloanc. Paul Cezanne d. Vincent Van Gogh2.) Discuss connections between common objects used in those time periods and those today; explain differences and similarities in society.3.) Draw sketches of just one object. Study line through contour drawings. 4.) Make final drawing using graphite pencils to show line, space, form, and value. 5.) Each table will bring in one object from home to form their table’s composition for still life.B. Crumpled paper still life drawing (1 week)1.) Each student will create a drawing of a crumpled up a piece of paper2.) Study of light, line, value change, form, etc.3.) Focus mainly on light, cast shadows, etc.4.) Stress use of observation skills, correct proportions C. Weave drawing (3 – 4 weeks)1.) Choose theme- a subject matter that says something about the student, their interests, personality, etc. 2.) Show drawings by artists such as M.C. Escher 3.) Use magazines, photographs, etc. to gather ideas, pictures to draw from4.) Demonstrate how to enlarge pictures using a grid 5.) Study shading, scale/enlargement, value change, form, etc. 6.) Create a drawing that resembles a weaving (by combining two pictures, one of a darker tone than the other, and omitting sections of each to give weaving look)D. Surrealist Hand-Scapes (3 – 4 weeks)1.) Introduce students to surrealism using artist examples a. Max Ernstb. Salvador Dalic. Rene Magritte2.) Discuss anatomy of hand, show examples of drawingsa. Da Vincib. Anatomy books3.) Draw sketches of hands 4.) Draw sketches of ideas for composition (background scenery) 5.) Make final drawing of composition including surrealist imagery and realistic hand6.) Study elements and principles of design including line, value, texture, form, unity,etc.Unit 2: Painting (approx. 10 weeks)A. O’Keeffe Flower Paintings (3 – 4 weeks)1.) Use power point to study the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe2.) Go on a nature walk to pick out and observe flowers3.) Draw sketches of flowers4.) Paint (oil) enlarged portion of flower as final project5.) Study color, value, line, form B. Glass Bottle paintings (3 weeks)1.) Study life and work of Janet Fish (perhaps using power point and books for visualillustration) 2.) Each student will choose a glass bottle, wine glass, jar etc. to paint3.) First practice sketches of object to create good composition of still life4.) Make acrylic painting of composition capturing light reflections on bottle5.) Study light, line, color in painting C. Artist homage paintings (4 weeks)1.) Students will choose two artists (from list) to research about their techniques and subject matters2.) They will write short papers about their findings. 3.) They will combine two of these artist’s techniques to create their own composition and oil painting. (For example, mixing Van Gogh’s style of brush strokes with O’Keeffe’s style of enlarged flowers) 4.) Draw sketches of ideas for composition 5.) Paint large composition honoring and depicting both artist’s techniques6.) Study of art history (artist’s lives, work), elements and principles of design: color, line, shape, form, value,
