TA Office hours TBA in class EMAIL: [email protected] Course Description Women and Men in Contemporary Culture (WST 3930 – Section 4127/SYG 2930 – Section 522) Fall 2009 This course considers the social construction of gender, sexuality, race, class, and other identity categories. Readings focus on individuals, families, and cultural groups, mainly in the U.S. but with attention to other nations. Subjects as intimate as the body and violence and as pervasive as politics and the law are included. We emphasize differences in daily life experiences of health care, education, sports, and religion. Finally, we examine the potential of movements for social change. (Required Books): Text: Aulette, Wittner, & Blakely, Gendered Worlds. Oxford University Press, 2009. (Required additional book): Daphne Scholinski, The Last Time I Wore A Dress. Riverhead Books, 1997. Course Requirements: 2 Exams (one mid-semester, one at end of semester) = 50% 3 Quizzes = 30% 2 typed 2 pg. researched reactions essays = 20% ---------- Total points = 100% **** Missed exams can be made up by using averaging of course points and make-ups where possible to make up the missing exam due to flu illness. If you have flu symptoms or develop the flu, please do not come to class. Email me or TA to let us know of your absence. We are concerned for your health as well as the health of others. Given reports on the H1N1 flu and the pressure this will put on local health agencies, you will not need documentation.
