Hardware, software, and communications issues are examined. Databases, enterprise resource planning systems, and other overarching applications are analyzed. Ethical issues of privacy and piracy are discussed. Class materials: Students must purchase "British Columbia's Pharmanet Project" but all other materials will be accessible via the instructor's Web site. Topics Include • the role of information technology in business • hardware and software - past, present, and future • technology enhanced communications and presentations • database management systems: queries • ethical issues: piracy, privacy, professional codes of ethics Course Procedures: You are required to have a current UNCW computer account and you should frequently check that account for e-mail. E-mails to the class will also be sent to the addresses supplied to the Graduate Programs Office - it is your responsibility to be sure that e-mail address kept by that office is correct. Check the instructor’s Web site frequently. If you do not check the instructor’s Web site frequently you should expect your grade to suffer. Grading: (100 point total) Letter Grade: 10 Points - Pharmanet case A = at least 93 points 20 Points - Hands-on Presentations, Spreadsheets, Databases A- = at least 90 points 20 Points - MIS Audit B+ = at least 87 points 10 Points - Learning Alliance Project B = at least 83 points 40 Points - Exam B- = at least 80 points C+ = at least 77 points C = at least 73 points C- = at least 70 pointsWeek Description 1-12-06 Introduction • the role of information technology in business • Moores' Law and its implications for technology in business • new technologies with potential to alter business practices • "IT Doesn't Matter" • "IT Does Matter" Hands-on project 20 points • spreadsheets (formulas, data collection, macros) • databases (constrained and parameter queries) 1-19-06 "British Columbia's Pharmanet Project" • students must be prepared to discuss the case in class (5 points) • this is not a "solve it" case, it is a case specifically designed to stimulate class discussion about the issues involved, technological methods that address the issues, and the trade-offs that are required • last part of the class will be spent by the teams working on a paper (15 points) o subject: Actions to Maintain Data Privacy o due: 1-26-06 o 5 to 6 double-spaced pages 1-26-06 Ethical issues • piracy, privacy, and intellectual capital • "A Model for Information Assurance Benefits" • "Power Conflict, Commitment & the Development of Sales & Marketing IS/IT..." 2-2-06 Cases • "China and Information Technology ..." • 2-9-06 Invited Speaker 2-16-06 MIS Audit 2-23-06 • develop spreadsheet for establishing the dollar value of a specific information system project 3-2-06 Exam - 60
