ANP 370 1st Edition Lecture 2 Outline of Last Lecture I Medical Anthropology health illness sickness how culture plays a role Outline of Current Lecture II Career Path of a Medical Anthropologist III 1970s 1980s anthropology IV Regan Bush era V Beyond the Ivory Tower reading discussion VI Singer s View Current Lecture Career Path Many medical anthropologist work in International Development It has a long history after the World War II o Developed countries Idea was a linear model of following the West o 1st generation working with small communities to understand their model of health instead of trying to follow Western ideas Up until 1970s they work with International organizations but criticize bureaucratic behavior and institutional culture of those organizations These organizations believe that development projects fail because of the local culture 1973 1980 Due to failure of development projects the US Congress responded The new legislation requires that research need to be carried out in communities prior to project planning that match local needs The new development discourses shift toward more grass roots planning Many anthropologists started working with development organizations again 1981 1993 and beyond During Regan Bush era US foreign assistance replaced the government to government aid and supported for private organizations and industries Many anthropologists who were working with government organizations left their positions Many anthropologists started working with NGOs multilateral organizations UN World Bank and policy institutes These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute Some set up their own private foundations and consulting firms Medical Anthropologists are involved in Academic and applied field like Monir work in universities and research institutions working in academia o Applied field working in international agencies AIDs in Africa mostly but all over the world Poverty and nutrition malnutrition not just biological thing but politically situated and grounded as well as societally and culturally o Many look at child malnutrition Primary health care basic health care how to deliver the PHC in rural or nonwestern setting where people don t have access to health care Family planning Infectious diseases Global health emerging discipline MSU trying to establish dept of global health Medical ethics many work in this field study of viewpoints one can take Graduate schools Medical anthropology program with field concentrations or theoretical orientations Dual degree programs with school of medicine nursing public health and epidemiology Some work in int l health and others in Public Health and Community Health in the US Examine the past and the present the bio cultural synthesis as well as the political and cultural dimensions of health Beyond the Ivory Tower Critical Medical Anthroplogy recognizes that health itself is a profoundly political issue As powerful social classes ultimately control the health care system what can we do o The most affected populations can t afford the wealth care o We are the wealthiest nation on earth and can t afford the health of our own citizens Singer s view Singer proposes 2 transformations o System correction praxis the implementation of minor material improvements that avoid any alteration of the social system o System challenging praxis it unmasks the causes of suffering the sources of exploitation and more concerned with the origin of soacial inequality o No anthropologists can escape involvement These are the ideas Singer proposed to change the system that is controlled by social classes
