Certo Course Description A practical introduction to first-line supervision. Emphasis will be given to topics of leadership, organizations, selection and evaluation of employees, safety and employee motivation. Course Objectives 1. To provide students with a basic understanding of the nature of the work performed by a supervisor. 2. To provide students with supervisor and ethical situations and use critical thinking to work through to solutions. 3. To provide scenario’s for students to apply the knowledge learned. Teaching Philosophy The design of the instruction is to stimulate critical thinking. Students will be challenged to be prepared so they can confront issues from the point of view of the supervisor. Students will be required to reach beyond their comfort level and make decisions based on research of facts. Attendance Policy I appreciate your decision to take this class. In making this decision you have the responsibility to attend class every time it meets. It is my commitment to offer sessions worth attending. You will be subject to withdraw form the course if you fail to attend class without notifying me ahead of time. Student Responsibilities 1) Read each chapter prior to class period in which it will be discussed. 2) Each student may be asked to explain the story (Cold Call Exercise) at the beginning of each class. Each response will be given a grade of 25 points if accurate. 3) Homework assignments must be typed, detailed and supported by material in the Chapter. All homework must be turned in at the beginning of each class. Each assignment will have a grade of 10 points. 4) Five tests will be conducted throughout the semester. (100 Points Each) 5) Students are expected to be involved in class room discussions. This course is designed for you to reason through issues by talking with your classmates. I encourage each student to participate and actively discuss issues. 6) Grading as follows: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-697) Each student is expected to be on time and prepared with readings. 8) Absences will have a negative effect on your grade. If you need to miss a class, you must notify me prior to class by phone or email. 9) April 4th is the first day to register for Summer Classes. 10) April 13th is the final day for withdraws. 11) All cell phones must be on silent or vibrate in the classroom. 12) Students are expected to be tolerant of differing opinions. 13) No foul language is acceptable in the classroom or written in assignments. 14) Any forms that require my signature can be done at your convenience either before or after class. Academic Dishonesty Policy The definition of Academic Dishonesty is defined as, but not limited to cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, or facilitating academic dishonesty. As the instructor I have the authority to fail the test, lower the grade, involuntarily withdrawal the course, or fail the course. Other sanctions may be imposed according to the IVCC Student Code of Conduct. The student has the right to appeal through the Academic Dean’s Office and the Vice President of Academic Affairs office as outlined in Section II, Student Academic Complaints. Special Needs Academic accommodations for students with special needs are available through the office of the Special Population Coordinator, B-204 in LRC-B, 224-0284. A student may be eligible for academic accommodation if you have a physical, psychiatric or cognitive disability. Students must request academic accommodations.
