ENG 085 Instructor: Mrs. Kathie GatesEmail: [email protected] or [email protected] 085--Guidelines for Completing Vocabulary (400 points)1. A total of 120 words taken from the required readings. You may do about 10 words per week or all of them at once. 2. Words are written on the plain side of the 3x5 cards. Write the pronunciation under the word. Using the lined back of the card, write the definition(s) of the word. 3. Alphabetize the words as you add more words. You may want to get a box to hold your cards. 4. Definitions must be meaningful to you and clear to the reader. 5. Try to include a synonym and an antonym for each word. Print the synonym in the left corner and the antonym in the right corner of your card with the definition in the middle. 6. Definitions may be taken from the reading book, but a dictionary is recommended. Definitions cannot include a different form of the word that is being defined. (E.g., your is “spectral” and the dictionary says, “relating to a “specter.” These are two forms of the same word. You look up “specter,” which means “ghost.” You have two choices: 1) Use the word “specter,” defined as “ghost.” 2) Use the word “spectral,” defined as “relating to a ghost.”)7. Handwriting must be clearly legible.8. Capital letters should be used only for proper nouns.9. Every 30 words a vocabulary quiz will be given which will test your understanding of the definition of the words. Reviewingyour fact cards with a classmate or by yourself should be done for a few minutes each day.10. 4 vocabulary quizzes will be given. Each quiz will be worth100 points for a total of 400 points.
