MA 15200X Exam 3 Memo. Tuesday, December 1st, 2009, 6 PM LOCATION: Regular Classroom 1) Exam 3 covers sections 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 4.1 – 4.4, lesson 30, 5.1, and App. G. This is the material covered in lessons #25-35. Note: Lesson 36 (section 3.1) and lesson 37 (section 3.1 and Appendix H) are not included on exam 3, although the homework for that lesson is due on the Wednesday night after the exam. 2) There are fifteen multiple-choice problems on the exam. The exam will be machine graded. No partial credit will be given. You will be allowed 60 minutes to take the exam. 3) The exam is self-explanatory. No questions will be allowed unless a student believes there is a typographical or printing error. 4) The following are appropriate review problems. These problems are found in the textbook in the chapter review exercises at the end of chapters 2, 4, and 5. You should also review some problems found in the appendix G section and the problems found on the lesson 30 worksheet. The answers for the review exercises are provided at the back of the book. • Page 307, Chapter 2 Review Exercises: 71, 72, 74, 76, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89, 90, 93, 94, 102, 104, 105 • Page 475, Chapter 4 Review Exercises: 11, 12(a,b), 15, 18, 19 – 24 all, 27, 28, 48(a,b), 51, 52, 56, 57, 58, 64, 65, 68, 74, 76, 78, 79, • (Review the lesson 30 problems on the assignment worksheet.) • Page 549, Chapter 5 Review Exercises: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 • (Review the Appendix G assigned problems from the textbook.) There are also chapter tests at the end of each chapter. You may practice some of those problems as well. The answers are in the back of the book. It is recommended that you re-work all homework problems. You could work the corresponding problems from the textbook. (See assignment sheet.) To review and re-try the online problems, go to your gradebook in coursecompass, click on the word ‘review’ in blue for an assignment. Once you select a problem, you may have to click on ‘similar example’ in order to generate a different problem. 5) Students need to know the formulas for the perimeter and area of a rectangle or square, the simple interest formula, the midpoint formula, the properties of logarithms, and the change of base formula Any other needed formulas, including the quadratic formula, the standard form of a circle, and the compound interest formulas will be provided. Note: Exponential or logarithmic formulas, such as those used for lesson 30, will be provided as needed. Information continued on the next page.6) Exams from previous semesters are available on the web page. These are good for review purposes, but not a guarantee of what will or will not be on the exam. Do not use these past exams as your only means of studying. Review homework problems and quiz problems. Remember: This textbook is new this semester. Previous exams were written with a different textbook in mind. You should understand that some exam problems, such as those on past exams, may be more difficult for students than the ones on the online homework. 7) Students must bring a PHOTO ID with them to the exam, preferably your Purdue ID. 8) No one will be allowed to leave for the first 20 minutes of the exam. Students arriving after 20 minutes of the exam may be allowed to take the make-up exam. If they arrived late for a non-valid reason, a grade penalty will be applied. 9) Your instructor will describe where you will be seated and will assign seats. You are to sit in your assigned seat. 10) Bring with you the following: pencils, erasers, a scientific one-line calculator, and Purdue ID. Do not bring scratch paper. Turn your cell phone off; or better, do not bring it. Do not wear hats or tinted glasses (sunglasses). Book bags, totes, or purses should be closed and on the floor during the exam. 11) At the first exam, several students entered information incorrectly on the scantron answer sheets; incorrect spelling of names, wrong ID numbers, and wrong section numbers. It causes many problems when information is entered in the math department’s data incorrectly. 12) Be aware; if you bring an unapproved calculator to the exam, you may have to complete the exam without a calculator. Be sure you have a one-line scientific calculator. Check with your instructor, if in doubt. The math department recommends a TI-30XA calculator. 13) A student must contact the course coordinator, Charlotte Bailey, in MATH 802 (496-3145 or [email protected]) IMMEDIATELY, if some emergency prevents him/her from taking the exam. You must see Charlotte in person ASAP to arrange to take the alternate exam. If you have an academic conflict with the evening exam, you must let the course coordinator know no later than two business days (Tuesday, November 24th) before the exam takes place. Note: This date is prior to Thanksgiving Break. If you have an emergency situation that will prevent you from attending an evening exam you must contact the course coordinator by telephone or in person (not by voice mail or E-mail) no later than 2:00 PM on the day of the exam. For non-valid reasons, a make-up may be allowed with a grade penalty. Not knowing the right date, time, or location of an exam is NOT a valid reason for missing
