R Help Installation Spring 2004There are directions for installing R on your computer at the R website(http://cran.rproject.org/), but a little extra help makes it easier.Obtaining the softwareGo the R homepage at http://cran.us.r-project.org/.Windows (95 or later)Click on the link Windows (95 and later), then click on the link base/, and finally clickon rw1071.exe (or the most recent version which could have a larger number). This beginsthe download of a file whose size is about 20MB. After the download is complete, doubleclick on the downloaded file and follow the on s creen installation instructions.Macintosh (OS 10.1 and previous)Click on the link MacOS (System 8.6 to 9.1 and MacOS X), then click on rm171.sit (orthe most recent version which could have a larger number) which begins the download.When given a choice to unstuff or save, choose save and save it on your desktop. Doubleclick on the downloaded file. You Mac will unstuff the downloaded file and create an Rfolder. Inside this folder, there are many files including one with the R logo. I dragged acopy of this to my panel and then dragged the whole R folder to my Applications folder(located on the hard drive). After completing this, you can drag the original downloadedfile to your trash bin. Loading R from a CD onto a PC Insert the CD into the drive, openthe C D (from My Computer using the Windows operating system) and double click on therw1071.exe icon to begin installation. Follow the on scree n installation instructions.Macintosh (OS 10.2 and later)1. Click on the link MacOS (System 10.2.x and above)2. Option click on the file RAqua.dmg and save it to your desk top.3. Click on RAqua.dmg on your desktop and you will create a disk image file calledRAqua-1.8.1. It should open automatically and display a list of fileJ_libreadline.pkgJ_libxml2.pkgJ_tcltk.pkgRAqua-FAQRAqua.pkgReadMe.txtwww.R-project.org4. Click on RAqua.pkg and a mess of windows will open.5. Find the RAqua/X11 Installer window and click on continue. Next a window for installing X11/TclTk will pop open (at least it did on my machinerunning 10.3). Go ahead and install it too.7. Next a w indow for LibXml2 will open. Install it too.8. Next a w indow for LibReadline will open. Install it too.9. Now you are done.10. There should be a application in your Applications Folder called StartR which youcan drag to the dock if you like.11. You can now delete RAqua.dmg and RAqua-1.8.1 from your desktop.There is an issue with this installation on system 10.3 (but not on earlier versions of theoperating system). If you get an error that looks like thisdyld: gcc version mismatch for library: /usr/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib(compatibility version of user: 5.0.0 greater than library’s version: 4.0.0)let me know and I’ll try to help.Adapted from instructions by Professor Bret Larget Page
