Course Description: This practicum is a continuation of Practicum II. The student will be expected to develop more advanced skills in interviewing, assessment, and intervention. Simultaneously, continued emphasis will be placed upon ethical, legal, and professional issues. Prerequisite: PSY 681 with a grade of B or better. Course Objectives: 1. To provide the student with an opportunity to expand his/her clinical skills through formal, structured supervision. 2. To provide the student with ongoing instruction regarding significant aspects of counseling, including:  Ethical and legal issues  Maintaining the therapeutic alliance  Dealing with transference, counter transference, and resistance.2  Counselor self-disclosure  Diagnostic skills and case conceptualization  Intervention strategies and evaluation of counselor effectiveness  Termination concerns 3. To provide the student with an opportunity to collaborate with other professionals and to work as a member of a treatment team. 4. To increase the student’s appreciation of diversity and of the role it may play in a client’s presenting problem and response to counseling. 5. To increase the student’s skill in writing case presentations, maintaining progress notes, and completing other required clinical documentation. 6. To provide a supportive environment that facilitates the student’s personal and professional growth. Course Requirements: 1. Class attendance and participation. This includes attending each class, arriving on time for class, actively participating in discussions, providing constructive feedback to your colleagues, and appropriately accepting feedback from your peers and from the instructor. The student is expected to display those behaviors characteristic of a professional counselor. Missing a class will result in the student’s losing five (5) grade points per occurrence. Arriving late for class or leaving early will result in a loss of three (3) grade points per incident. Any points lost due to attendance problems will be deducted at the end of the course from the total points earned by the student. 2. Book Review. Each student will select, read, and review one book that relates to the practice of therapy. The student will orally present this book review to the class. (10 points) 3. Analysis of Therapy Sessions. Each student will present two, detailed analyses of therapy sessions. These presentations will be on two different clients. Session analyses will be presented orally to the class and a written copy will be given to the instructor. Each oral presentation should be between 20 and 30 minutes long. The student will get permission from clients to videotape or audiotape their counseling session. (See Practicum Handbook for the client permission form.) Each presentation should include the following information: • Reason for the referral. • Background information on the client that includes demographic information and psychosocial history.3 • Presenting problem(s):  Client’s description of the problem.  Why is the client coming for help at this particular time?  Onset, frequency, duration, and impact on the client’s life.  Client’s emotional and behavioral responses to the problem(s).  Previous psychological treatment, if any, and response to it. • Current functioning • Diagnostic impression on all five axes. • Treatment recommendations. • Any additional information that is relevant to understanding the client’s situation. The student will play pre-selected portions of his/her video or audiotape about which the student has concerns or questions, or will play a portion of the tape that the student believes has clinical significance. (25 points per presentation; 50 points total) 4. Submission of Practicum Forms. The student must submit on time all practicum-related forms that are required in the Handbook of Practicum Experiences. The specific deadlines will be provided during the first class session. (10 points) 5. Completion of a minimum of 150 hours of direct and indirect client contact at the student’s practicum placement. These contact hours will consist of direct clinical interaction with clients, the completion of necessary documentation, such as case notes, and receiving on-site supervision. A precise log of these contact hours must be maintained throughout the course and will be submitted at the end of the course (see Practicum Handbook ). The evaluations of the student’s on-site supervisor will determine the points earned in this category. (A= 15, B= 12, C= 9, F= 0; 30 Points Possible: Mid-semester- 15, Final- 15.) Grading Criteria: A = 90-100 points B = 80- 89 points C = 70-79 points F = 69 points and
