“The ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed, the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back. I am sure that the power of vested interests is vastly exaggerated compared with the gradual encroachment of ideas… But, soon or late, it is ideas, not vested interests, which are dangerous for good or evil…” John Maynard Keynes ECO 105 Principles of Economics Oguzhan (Oz) Dincer Spring 2014 Contact: Office : Stevenson 426G E-mail : [email protected] Office Hours: TBA Lecture: M W 10.00-11.50 AM. Course Description: The purpose of the course is to discuss the key issues in micro and macroeconomics. The first half of the course covers macroeconomics and the second half covers micro. Macroeconomics: We are going to examine the economy as a whole. After discussing the long-run issues, we are going to discuss policy issues in the short-run. Microeconomics: We first are going to discuss how markets work within the context of a simple model of supply and demand. Then we are going to examine the firm and consumer behavior individually. Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam for the course (again, you will be using MyEconLab). Each exam will comprise 25 percent of your grade, and will cover a set of material that will be specified in the last class prior to exam. Regarding the make-up policy, there will be no make-up exams. If there are extenuating circumstances, I should be notified before the test date.
