Students will begin to develop a model of self as a professional nurse, and will explore ways of knowing as a nurse. Communication and interpersonal relationships will be emphasized. Students will be introduced to group dynamics and willbe expected to participate in group assignments. Possible career trajectories will be explored.PRE-REQUISITES:Admission to the JCC-University of Michigan transfer Nursing ProgramCOURSE OBJECTIVES:At the completion of the course the student will be able to:1. Describe Nursing’s social mandate and the societal context of nursing practice, including legal and regulatory parameters.2. Describe Nursing’s contributions to the health care delivery system.3. Describe models of professional behavior.4. Develop a sense of self as a beginning professional.5. Identify basic ethical principles and theories. 6. Describe potential strategies for developing career trajectories and their achievement7. Identify principles of effective communication.8. Describe impact of personal communication on interpersonal interactions.9. Apply ways of knowing in nursing to the self as developing professional.10. Apply basic group principles to group interactions.11. Each course participant is expected to:1. Attend all scheduled classes.2. Read in-depth and critically analyze readings assigned for each session.3. Actively participate in class discussions of issues related to the assigned topics.4. Prepare written assignments in accordance with guidelines.5. Submit written assignments on time.6. Fulfill group assignment responsibilities and commit to role of effective team member.7. Participate in course electronic communication (E-Mail, Educator, Internet etc).8. Demonstrate values of the undergraduate curriculum in all course interactions.9. Maintain professional standards of confidentiality, integrity and ethical conduct as outlined in the ANA Code of Ethics.
