Ashley PorterSeptember 29, 2006Secondary Methods of Art EducationPaper Marbleized Paper (with acrylic paint) Grade 6Marbleizing paper with emphasis on colorObjectives: Art1. Students will be familiar with proper vocabulary (primary and secondary colors, complementary colors, tints, and shades) and be able to produce a written and verbal explanation of their finished product as part of their evaluation. 2.02: Explore and identify the use of a variety of materials using proper vocabulary and terminology6.05: Critique artwork through the use of: proper vocabulary, art elements and design principles, meaning, feeling, mood, and ideas, oral and written expression. 2. Students will plan for design and color use on their finished papers1.01: Plan and organize for creating art3. Students will be able to identify and use the elements of design (in this case, color) as a guide for the projects and source of evaluation. Also, the use of the principles of design (variety and unity). 3.02: Recognize and discuss the elements and principles of design in an aesthetic composition4. Students will produce at least three finished marbleized papers meeting these standards for each: one with complementary colors, one with tints and one with shades.Objectives: General1. Students will learn a new technique and see its use in creating things such as stationary, cards, book covers, etc. 8.01: Develop and discuss an awareness of art as an avocationMaterials:Shaving creamWaterTupperware container/water trayAcrylic paint in various colors (red, yellow, blue, violet, green, orange, white, black)Spoon(s)Mixing cups, small bowls, or film canistersPaper (manila and/or construction paper)Paintbrush and/or combNewspaperPlate or baking sheetMotivation:Day 11. Ask: Has anyone seen marbleized paper before? Where? 2. Ask: Does anyone know how to make marbleized paper? 3. Show examples of marbleized paper and discuss what purposes it can be used for4. Introduce and show short instructional video on process of marbleizing paper5. Define requirements for finished product (number 7 on Art Objectives)Day 2 – 3 1. Ask: Can anyone tell me what the primary and secondary colors are? 2. Ask: What are the complementary colors? 3. Ask: What are tints and shades? 4. Remind the students of requirements for three finished pieces of marbleized paper. Explain how they can mix the colors and form designs. 5. Show examples of finished papers and explain how those students made their designs (mixing colors, tools to make swirls, etc.)Project Procedure: Day 11. Split the class up into four groups and separate them to different tables/stations in the class. They will work in their groups to complete the process.2. Instruct each group to mix the paint colors they will use for their paper. To mix paint pour two spoonfuls of water into a mixing cup or small bowl. Slowly add water and stir until the paint drips easily off the spoon. 3. After paint is mixed tell students to take a can of shaving cream and spray it out onto a plate or baking sheet and use hand to create smooth surface. (You may want to provide a bucket of water at each station so students can use it to rinse their hands instead of going to and from the sink often.)4. To create paint designs on the shaving cream take a spoon (a straw would work aswell to create dot pattern) and drizzle paint over top surface of shaving cream. 5. If desired, use a comb, the end of a paint brush, etc. to swirl designs into the paint as it rests on the top of the shaving cream.6. Once you have a desired design, lay paper (manila or construction) across the top of the shaving cream so that it can absorb the paint. Hold the paper by the edges and lay the middle down first, then drop the sides so that the entire paper is layingflat. (If needed, press down a little to make sure it absorbs the paint.) 7. Pick up a corner of the paper and pull it out quickly as to not mess up the design of the paint. 8. Lay the paper on newspaper or paper towels. Allow to sit overnight so that the shaving cream will dissolve and design will be left. 9. Use paper towels to skim the surface of the shaving cream to clean it for the next round of paint. Add more shaving cream if needed.Day 2 - 31. Each group will take turns creating their marbleized papers, this day as their finished products. Continue in the same procedure as the day before.Class Procedure:1. When students enter the room they will know to go and sit at their desks for the motivational part of the lesson. 2. Before students arrive the teacher will have set up the materials needed in the classroom. Depending on the set-up of the class there will be a “station” at each table and/or against a back counter.3. All the materials will be together and ready for student use as to not waste class time. 4. After students have created their marbleized paper they will take the finished product to a drying rack. If room on the rack runs out students will place their papers on the floor against the wall (on top of newspapers). 5. When it is nearly time to leave the students will replace all their materials on the table that their station is located. All their papers should be put in the correct place(drying rack or floor) and they should sit at their seats until dismissal. Evaluation:1. Ask students how they used complementary colors, tints and shades. (Explain about each finished product. For example: “My first marbleized paper used the complementary colors of orange and violet in a swirled design.”)2. Which colors are your favorites? Why? How do those colors or designs make you feel?3. Ask students to define different vocabulary and terms. (Discussed during motivational period.)4. Ask students how they created their marbleized papers; the steps and techniques. 5. Have them write about their experience and the answers to the above questions in their sketchbooks. Adapted from:
