Art 1301: Art Appreciation – Instructor: Kara Donatelli Phone: 894-9611, ext. 2267 [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to assist students seeking to acquire the knowledge and skills required to make and support personal decisions about works of art. COURSE OBJECTIVES:  To introduce students to significant works of art.  To allow opportunities for discussing the visual, intellectual, and emotional importance of art through vocabulary and the principles and elements of design.  To instill confidence for speaking and writing about art.  To acquaint students with a variety of art media, equipment, tools, and techniques through demonstrations and projects.  To encourage the practice of viewing art through visits to art exhibits.  To nurture a greater appreciation and understanding for the arts. DISCLAIMER: There is a historical component in our study of art. Some of the images or discussions concerning particular artists or art forms may deal with subjects offensive to some students. Feel free to calmly defend your point of view during discussions of these subjects, recognizing that not everyone thinks and behaves alike so please keep an open mind. REQUIRED MATERIALS: The Art of Seeing GRADING BASED ON: 1. Class and individual projects: Projects include written critiques, paper and/or presentation, and individual and group in class assignments. 2. Class attendance: Attendance is taken within the first five (5) minutes of the class period. 3. Presentation of work: Papers must be typed and consideration given to hands on projects. 4. Participation: Actively contribute to discussions, offer your opinion and suggestions, and help clean up after all in class assignments. 5. Punctuality: COMPLETE ALL WORK ON TIME! ATTENDANCE: 1. Attendance is a key factor in determining your grade. For a 3 credit hour class, 3 classes may be missed before your grade is lowered. For each class missed after 3 the grade will be lowered 1 grade each time. 4 absences = 1 letter grade reduction (“A” to “B”, “B” to “C”, etc.) 5 absences = 2 letter grade reduction (“A” to “C”, “B” to “D”, etc.) 2. Late projects may be handed in at the following class and will automatically drop one letter grade for every class it is late. 1 class late = 1 letter grade reduction (“A” to “B”, “B” to “C”, etc.) 2 classes late = 2 letter grade reduction (“A” to “C”, “B” to “D”, etc.) EXTRA CREDIT: There will be NO extra credit accepted for this course. CLASSROOM DECORUM 1. All pagers and cell phones must be turned off before entering the classroom. 2. If a cell phone goes off the entire class will be given a homework assignment due at the beginning of the next class period. 3. You MUST be present during ALL final presentations. Failure to attend will result in 10 points taken off of your presentation grade.REMINDER: It is very important to come to class prepared to work, do the necessary preliminary work so you are ready to work during class time. ACADEMIC HONESTY: The faculty is strongly committed to upholding standards of academic integrity. These standards, at the minimum, require that students never present the work of others as their own. If you are caught cheating you will automatically receive a zero on the test/quiz and be removed from the class until further notice. DIVERSITY STATEMENT: In this class, the teacher will establish and support an environment that values and nurtures individual and group differences and encourages engagement and interaction. Understanding and respecting multiple experiences and perspectives will serve to challenge and stimulate all of us to learn about others, about the larger world and about ourselves. I will not drop anyone.You Must complete one (1) written critique over one (1) work of art from any of the galleries listed below. This one (1) page paper must be turned in NO later _______for MWF classes or _______________ for TTH classes, no exceptions. Directions: You will list the title, artist, and medium of the piece then describe what the image is (if it is representational), what you see, what it makes you think, how it makes you feel, etc… Papers must be double spaced with font no larger than 12 point.
