Carolina Tovar Borrero John Clevenger Psychology Nov 16 2012 The actions demonstrated by Heaven s Gate were very extreme and unusual A cult is defined as a group of individuals who exhibit intense and unquestioning devotion to a single cause 507 The way their members were all willing and happy to commit suicide just to get closer to starships so they can be beyond human beings Listening to the goodbye video released after their suicides seems unreal that its members can view ending their life as a positive thing and a way to go home The members of Heaven s Gate were taught to believe that Virgin Mary was impregnated by being brought up onto a spacecraft These people were falling into collective delusions simultaneously come to be convinced of bizarre things that are false 497 As describing this belief a former member Michael Conyers he believed this explanation because it was better than accepting a virginal birth it had science and facts They also believed that there was no such thing as gender or emotion They were completely naked of any type personality Deindividuation is a term which means Tendency of people to engage in uncharacteristic behavior when they are stripped of their usual identities 502 They did not allow themselves to feel any arousal and had consequences if they did not cut it off early enough Simply seeing the outline of Heaven s Gate with a persuasive leader that promotes reliability you would not question the morals behind this corrupt cult They detach group members from any outside connection They frown upon questioning the group s motives and endure training practices that slowly brainwash members Some major offenses including any form of deceit allowing arousal in thought or action trusting own judgment criticizing other members and accepting the position I can t
