Lab Manual for BSC 1005CCatalog DescriptionThis class is an introduction to the essential principles of biological science. Topicsinclude, but are not limited to, the nature of science and the scientific method, chemistryfor biology, cell structure, metabolism, reproduction and genetics, organisms and ecology.This is a general education course for non-biology majors. It is also recommended forstudents who need preparation before enrolling in a biology course for science majors.This course may also be used as a prerequisite for BSC2093C or MCB2010C whenminimum grades of a C have been earned in both BSC1005C and BSC1005L.Course ObjectivesThis is an introductory biology course that will provide you with the fundamentals forunderstanding biology. This semester, we will discuss the characteristics of livingorganisms, the basic principles of evolution, the basic principles of ecology, the structureand function of cells, cell reproduction, heredity, and genetics. The lab exercises willprovide hands on activities that should not only mirror the lecture material, but provide away to physically study the various processes of life.Attendance and ParticipationYou are expected to attend all class lectures. A sign-in sheet will be passed around at thebeginning of class. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have confirmedtheir presence by signing in. Missing signatures will be viewed as absences. If for somereason you can not make a lecture, you must inform me (via email preferably) that youwill be absent. You are also responsible for gathering the class notes and making up anywork missed on your own time. This class is meant to be both a lecture and opendiscussion format. I encourage class participation, especially when the class workcoincides with current world events. This will not only make the class more fun andrewarding, but will help increase your ability to understand the topics being discussed.Student Code of ConductThat said, I expect students to show respect for and tolerate each others points of view.Some subject areas may be controversial, and may be freely debated in the classroom, buta positive learning environment must be maintained. Be respectful of your fellowstudents desire to learn. Talking among classmates during lecture is a distraction and,more than likely, others would be interested in the subject being discussed. Please ensureall cell phones are turned off or placed on silent during class.Academic HonestyCheating, plagiarism, or any other form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.Any student caught doing so will be subject to Valencia’s policy on academic honesty.The immediate action will be an F on the assignment, with the potential for an F in thecourse and/or expulsion from the college.Students With DisabilitiesStudents MUST provide a letter from the Office of Students with Disabilities and discussspecific needs with me at the beginning of the semester. The Office of Students withDisabilities will determine what accommodations are needed for each student.CompetenciesValencia faculty defined four interrelated competencies that prepare students to succeedin both work and in their community. These competencies are:Think, Value, Communicate, ActThese core concepts are important in all aspects of your life (not just in education) andthis course provides an excellent chance to develop your skills in these areas. Grades and Testing2 exams (midterm & final), 100 pts each = 200 pts5 quizzes (lowest dropped), 25 pts each = 100 ptsGroup presentation = 100 pts10 Labs, 15 pts. each = 150 ptsLab Practical Exam = 100 ptsAttendance/class discussion = 50 ptsTotal Possible = 700 pts100-90% = A89-80% = B79-70% = C69-60% = D59% > = FAll quizzes and exams will begin promptly at the beginning of class. Each quiz will takethe first 10 minutes of class time. If you arrive late, you will have the remaining allottedclass time to finish your exam or quiz. If you miss the quiz entirely, it can only be madeup at my discretion and then only for a valid reason with proof (i.e. death in the family,emergency room visit, etc.). Usually, exams may not be made up. If you miss themidterm, the final exam will count double (once for each exam). The midterm exam willcover all information from the beginning of class to the midpoint. The final exam willcover all information from the midterm until the end of the class. If you miss the finalexam, you need to provide a valid, certifiable reason why you were unable to make it toclass. The quizzes will include all information covered between successive quizzes.DisclaimerI reserve the right to modify course procedures or policies at any time.
