THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO COLLEGE OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Course Number: MATH 1320-13864 Course Title: Mathematics For Business and Social Sciences I Credit Hours: 3 Term: Fall 2009 Course Meetings & Location: MWF 1130-1220 LART 208 Instructor: Jack Schoessler Office Location: EDUC 211D Contact Information: Phone number 747-6523 Office Hours: M-R 1030-1130 and by prior appointment Textbook, Materials: Required: Finite Mathematics & Applied Calculus, 4th Edition, by Stefan Waner and Steven Constenoble. The nine-chapter single edition is for Math 1320; the fourteen-chapter combined edition is for students who will take both Math 1320 and Math 2301. WebAssign: Students will use WebAssign for homework. The access code is part of the cost of a new textbook at the UTEP bookstore or elsewhere. If students purchase their textbooks used, they can purchase the code online at www.webassign.net. A scientific calculator is needed for this course. Course Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Math 1320 is a precalculus course for liberal arts, business, and other non-science majors. Students are expected to have a clear understanding of the topics listed: linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; systems of linear equations and their solutions; matrix algebra operations; mathematics of finance; algebra of sets; and concepts of probability. These form a solid foundation for subsequent courses in mathematics and other disciplines, as well as for direct application to real-life situations.Course Assignments: You will find all homework on WebAssign. Please try to use Mozilla Firefox, , since WebAssign works best with this browser. You must register for WebAssign; the class key for this course is: UTEP 3511 1726. Assessment of Course Objectives: Homework will count about 20% of your grade; attendance will count about 10% of your grade. There will be three tests (about 15% each) and a comprehensive final examination (about 25%). The test dates will be announced at least one week ahead of time. Grading Policy: Your grade for the course will be calculated using the following percentages: 45% Tests (3) 25% Final Examination (comprehensive) 10% Attendance 20% WebAssign Homework Average. Make-up Policy: No make up exams will be allowed except with proper documentation, i.e. doctor’s note, hospital’s note, or UTEP excused absence document. Homework is due on specified due dates; no exceptions. Attendance Policy: Students are strongly recommended to attend all class meetings. Academic Integrity Policy: Cheating on a test or quiz must be dealt with in accordance with university regulations. This means automatic referral to and adjudication by the Dean of Students. During a test or quiz, you must present yourself in a manner that reflects an understanding of the traditional standards of academic honesty. Civility Statement: Please turn off cell phones when you enter class and participate in class; active participation in this class is a vital part of your success. Violators of this policy will be escorted from the class. Students are expected to arrive for class on time and to remain for the entire class period.Disability Statement: Student Drop Deadline: If a student has, or suspects he/she has, a disability and needs an accommodation, he/she should contact the Disabled Student Services Office (DSSO) at 747-5148 or at <[email protected]> or go to Room 106 Union East Building. The student is responsible for presenting to the instructor any DSSO accommodation letters and instructions. The last day to drop a course with an automatic “W” grade is Friday, October 30th. Students will not be dropped by the instructor for poor performance, but may be dropped for excessive absence. Students will not be dropped by the instructor after the student drop deadline with a “W” grade. Help: Note: The MaRCS (Mathematics Resource Center for Students) in room 218 of the library provides tutorial help on a first come, first served basis. Hours are: M,T,R 0900-1800; W 0900-1900; F 0900-1400; and SA 1000-1400. Tutors are available at ACES (Academic Center for Engineers and Scientists) locations on campus; the main one is CRBL 101. Check the schedule at www.aces.utep.edu. It is essential to pay attention in class and take legible notes. It is essential to read the textbook and work through the example problems given in the book and in class. It is essential to complete and understand all assigned homework problems. Failure to accomplish the above, as a minimum, almost invariably ensures a less then satisfactory grade for any module.Tentative Schedule: Week Section(s) Covered August 24th Introduction, 1.1, 1.2 August 31st 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 September 7th 1.5, 9.1 September 14th 9.1, 9.2 September 21st 9.2, 9.3 September 28th 9.3, 2.1, 2.2 October 5th 2.3, 5.1 October 12th 5.2, 5.3 October 19th 5.3, 6.1 October 26th 6.2, 6.3 November 2nd 6.3, 6.4 November 9th 7.1, 7.2 November 16th 7.3, 7.4 November 23rd 7.4, 7.5 November 30th 7.6, Review December 7th Finals
