Data WarehousesFebruary 6 – February 10 What is a Data Warehouse:o A data warehouse is a logical collection of information gathered from many different operational databases used to create business intelligence that supports business analysis activities and decision-making tasks (p. 142).o Why are organizations opting to build data warehouses (p. 142)? Traditional operational databases do not have the ability to building business intelligence or performing advanced manipulation. Operational databases are already occupied with the task of processing transactions.o Data warehouses support decision-making, but do not support transaction processing. Data warehouses support only OLAP (p. 143).o Operational databases are two-dimensional. Data warehouses are made three-dimensional (see Figure 3.8) by combining operational databases to form layers of columns and rows (p. 143).o Data warehouses are not for everybody. They are very expensive and require a lot of support. Also, some organizations can meet their business intelligence needs simply by using operational databases (p. 147). Data-mining Tools:o Data-mining tools are the software tools you use to request (a.k.a. query) information in adata warehouse. Data-mining tools are to data warehouse users what the data manipulation subsystem is to database users (p. 145).o Examples of Data-Mining Tools: Query-and-reporting tools are used to manipulate data and generate simple reports and queries (p. 144). Intelligent agents utilize various AI tools to discover trends and patterns within a data warehouse (p. 144). Multidimensional analysis (MDA) tool are used to slice-and-dice a data and warehouse and find a specific piece of data (p. 145). Statistical tools help you apply mathematical models to the information stored in a data warehouse to discover new information (p. 145). Data Mart:o A data mart is a subset of a data warehouse in which only a focused portion of a data warehouse is kept (p. 145).o Data marts are good to use when only some people in your organization need access to only a portion of a data warehouse as opposed to all of it (p. 145).o Information is accessed from a data mart in the same manner as it is pulled from a data warehouse (p. 146). Information Resource Personnel:o At the top level of management, the chief information officer (CIO) is responsible for overseeing an organization’s information resources.
