emphasizes reading and analytical thinking and introduces research skills Students practice writing for a variety of audiences and purposes 3 Lec Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 2304015135 allowed 1 flash drive 2 gig or higher English Program Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the English program at Eastfield College students should be able to 1 Critically read and analyze college level material 2 Compose academic prose with a clear purpose and effective logical and relevant support 3 Apply various strategies to locate evaluate and synthesize ideas for a range of writing 4 Establish and maintain a clear controlling idea that serves as a thesis claim statement in an essay 5 Develop an essay that employs convincing evidence resulting in a sequence of effective and organized paragraphs 6 Compose effective grammatically sound sentences 7 Use the library and Internet as tools to locate and assess college level reading materials 8 Apply MLA format and style to cite courses within an essay 9 Successfully revise edit and proofread an essay 10 Compose an essay applying computer based technology 11 Demonstrate effective participation in a collaborative activity Course Objectives 1 To understand and demonstrate writing and speaking processes through invention organization drafting revision editing and presentation 2 To understand the importance of specifying audience and purpose and to select appropriate communication choices 3 To understand and appropriately apply modes of expression such as descriptive expositive narrative scientific and self expressive in written visual and oral communication 4 To participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening critical and reflective thinking and responding 5 To understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking problem solving and technical proficiency in the development of exposition and argument Guidelines English 1301 courses will require the following 1 A minimum of seven 7 essays written for several purposes using a variety of strategies 2 A minimum of one 1 of the seven essays written under timed conditions such as entirely in class 3 At least one 1 of the seven required essays undergoes collaborative peer review 4 Grammar and mechanics instruction given to address common errors and o reinforce editing skills in the process of writing Interactive online instruction and exercise PowerPoint overviews in class workshops and other instructional methods may be used as needed 5 Formatting for all essays adheres to Modern Language Association MLA style guidelines 6 Introduction to the basic concepts of research and documentation 7 Reading from an assortment of resources including student and professional writing that model variety of strategies and other aspects of the writing process 8 Optional midterm and or final examination given at the discretion of the instructor Evaluation Procedures Assignments This is a college course with college expectations College students do not determine which assignments will be completed You are expected to turn in every assignment on time regardless of absences illnesses or other responsibilities Late work will not be accepted Only assignments missed due to excused absences will be accepted and must be completed within two days Students must provide the instructor with a doctor or parent note for the absence to be considered excused It is the responsibility of the student to schedule an appointment with the professor to make up missed assignments Writing Expectations Students will compose essays that adhere to the grammatical and stylistic standards of academic American English and that follow Modern Language Association MLA style Essays will adhere to topic and length requirements designated for each assignment Correctly following specific assignment guidelines grammatical instruction and MLA style will impact the student s success in the course All major essays must be typed in MLA format If you do not adhere to the guidelines given the instructor is not required to accept your work Obtaining Final Course Grades Using eConnect Final Grade Reports are no longer mailed Convenient access is available online at www econnect dcccd edu Use your identification number when you log onto eConnect an online system developed by the DCCCD to provide you with timely information regarding your
