Aita, S.J., M.D. OFFICE HOURS Office: Barbelin 112F MWF after class Phone: (610) 660-3427 Email to reserve time Email: [email protected] (other times by appointment) SYLLABUS Course description and objective The purpose of the course is to increase your level of scientific literacy as it relates to a variety of bodily functions and to increase your awareness of current scientific events and their impact on your life. This course will explore basic principles of human anatomy, physiology and genetics. The organization and function of the human body will be described with an appreciation of underlying genetic and evolutionary concepts. (Open to all students except biology majors. Biology majors need permission of the Biology chair to take this course. Three lecture periods per week.) Required text • Biology of Humans: Concepts, Applications and Issues by Goodenough, McGuire & Wallace (Pearson Prentice Hall) Learning Goals By the completion of this course the student should be able to • Understand the complementarity of normal structure and function • Understand the integrating principle of homeostasis to show how normal structure and function is achieved and maintained by dynamic counterbalancing forces within the body • Display basic knowledge of the structure and function of the organs of the human body • Understand how organs play their distinctive roles in organ systems • Gain basic insight into the “Big Picture” which is a summary of the interaction between structures and functions of the different organ systems • Display basic knowledge of preventive medicine and risk factors • Display basic knowledge of aberrations in structure and function as they apply to selected disease states • Display skill in making oral presentations on selected clinical topics Learning Objectives & Course Requirements • Success in the course demands active class participation. • Quizzes will evaluate timely reading of assigned course material. • Three (3) tests will evaluate basic knowledge of the text and lecture material. • Final Exam will evaluate overall knowledge of course material.2 2 • Student Presentations will demonstrate knowledge of a clinical topic and skill of oral communication. o Group of 3 students – students & topic assigned by instructor o 15 minute presentation  10 minutes – overview of clinical topic  5 minutes – discussion of 2 interesting and relevant articles from popular press (newspaper or magazine). o May use a few power point slides to illustrate concepts (graphs, tables, pictures) o Each student in the group must demonstrate to the instructor that he or she was actively involved into the preparation and delivery of the presentation. o Hard copy of the power point slides (including names and signatures of each student in the group) must be given to the instructor at the beginning of the oral presentation & electronic copy must be sent to the instructor per Email attachment the same day. o Grading will be based on accuracy of information & communication skills. Do not read from slides. Do not be overly dependent on notes. Speak at a pace students can follow. And be interesting! Grading by Point System • 3 Tests (150 points each) o test 1 150 o test 2 150 o test 3 150 • Quizzes 150 • Presentation 50 • Final Exam 200 Total Points 850 Calculate final grade by dividing total points by 8.5: A 93-100 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 60-65 A- 90-92 B- 80-82 C - 70-72 F below 60 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 66-69 The quality and frequency of class participation may either lower or increase overall grade. There will be no make-up quizzes or tests without prior notification. The professor reserves the right to deny a make-up without a reason that is well documented. Make-ups may be objective, essay or oral (instructor’s choice).3 3 Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all classes. Daily roll will be taken. More than 5 unexcused absences will result in a grade of an “FA” – Failure due to attendance. Basic Courtesy • Show respect for instructor and fellow students • Arrive at class on time and don’t leave before class ends. • Turn off cell phones before class begins. • No text messaging during class. • No computer surfing during class. • Dress respectfully and do not wear a hat in class. Use of unauthorized notes or assistance during an exam will result in [failure of the assignment/failure of the course]. Plagiarism will also result in [failure of the assignment/failure of the course]. Any material copied or derived from another source must be acknowledged by giving a reference. For direct quotes, always use quotation marks and provide a reference. If you paraphrase something, you must provide a reference to acknowledge where you found the material.
