CLAR (CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY) 120: ANCIENT CITIES FALL 2013Tuesday Thursday 11-12:15, Murphey Hall 116The course is an introductory survey of the archaeology of early settlements, polities and urban centers of the ancient Near East and Egypt; and the Bronze Age, Early Iron Age and Archaic-Classical Greek Aegean. We will begin with the earliest known settlements in the Near East, ca. 9000 B.C., and trace urbanization as far as the Greek cities of the Aegean in the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. The purpose of thecourse is to examine the characteristics of urbanism, and the archeological evidence for settlement structure, urbanization and state-formation in different cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world.Professor Donald Haggis 226 Murphey [email protected] Office hours: T 1:30-2:30; Th 12:30-1:30 or by walk in.Co-instructor: Catharine Judson Murphey Hall 305, [email protected] Assistants (office hours forthcoming)Sarah Hilker – Mu Room 305, 962-7637, [email protected] Benson – Mu Room 114, 962-7650, [email protected] McCullough – Mu Room 114, 962-7650, [email protected] SyllabusThe schedule below is merely the order in which we will discuss the material and subject matter. We may not keep strictly to the actual dates (these are projected and ideal)—that is some sections may take longer, depending on class discussion and interests—but we will stick to this order. It is fundamental that you come to class and keep up with the material as presented. The material on the Midterm and Final Exams will cover only material that we have covered in class up to the exam date—they will not be cumulative, and will not cover material not covered in class.Date Subject Textbook ReadingAugust 20 IntroductionAugust 22 Neolithic Syria Palestine and Anatolia CP 1-17; Gates 13-28;Artstor: Jericho and Ain GhazalAugust 27 Neolithic Syria Palestine and Anatolia CP 1-17; Gates 13-28; Artstor: Catal HuyukAugust 29 Neolithic Syria Palestine and Anatolia CP 1-17; Gates 13-28; Artstor: Catal HuyukSeptember 3 Mesopotamia CP 18-25; Gates 29-40; Artstor: Eridu and UrukSeptember 5 Mesopotamia CP 25-29; Gates 40-66; Artstor: Ur and Early Dynastic Sumerian sitesSeptember 10 Mesopotamia CP 25-29; Gates 40-66; Artstor: Ur and Early Dynastic Sumerian sitesSeptember 12 Egypt CP 30-36; Gates 78-86; Artstor: Egypt Predynastic; Egypt Archaic (Dynasties 1-3)September 17 Egypt CP 37-42; Gates 87-98; Artstor: Old Kingdom (Dynasties IV-VI; Giza and Saqqara Mastabas)September 19 Egypt CP 37-42; Gates 99-119; Artstor: Middle Kingdom Kahun and New KingdomtemplesSeptember 24 Egypt CP 37-42; Gates 99-119; Artstor: Middle Kingdom Kahun and New KingdomtemplesSeptember 26 Bronze Age Crete (Minoans): CP 43-49; Gates 120-129; Biers chapter 2; Artstor: MinoansOctober 1 Bronze Age Crete (Minoans): CP 43-49; Gates 120-129; Biers chapter 2; Artstor: MinoansOctober 3 Bronze Age Crete (Minoans): CP 43-49; Gates 120-129; Biers chapter 2; Artstor: MinoansOctober 8 Bronze Age Crete (Minoans): CP 43-49; Gates 120-129; Biers chapter 2; Artstor: MinoansOctober 10 Bronze Age Greece (Mycenaeans) CP 49-52; Gates 131-139; Biers chapter 3; Artstor: MycenaeansOctober 15 MIDTERM EXAMFall Break (begins 5:00 P.M.
