Revision Techniques for EGL 102 Essays:1. Inventory technique (macro perspective)Student takes inventory of entire essay to find out if there is abalance of all required elements. Inventory form will need tobe created.Required Elements for Oral History Report: interview questions + interview answers +observations + quotes + reflections + dialogue + summaries + paraphrases + reactions2. Whole body paragraphs/Coherence technique (macro perspective)Student looks at and labels the major ideas in each paragraph (must be done on a hard copy of your essay). Then student creates a list of the labeled major ideas, numbers them, and analyzes them to insure a logical pattern. If necessary, one ortwo body paragraphs are repositioned so that coherence is achieved. This is done to the entire essay.3. Topic Sentence/Unity technique (micro perspective)Student focuses on topic sentences and makes sure every sentence/idea in the body paragraphs helps to support the topic sentences. Entire essay is under analysis. Here’s how to do: Take one body paragraph at a time and copy it onto a blank piece of virtual paper. Turn the paragraph into a numbered list. Look over list to determine if each sentence/idea supports the topic sentence. Revise, if necessary. Put back into paragraph form and replace original paragraph.4. Sentence Structure and Variety Check: (micro perspective)Student makes sure every type of sentence has been used (simple, compound, compound complex), so the writing is interesting. Variety is sought as is higher level sentences.Student can choose a body paragraph; copy and paste to new blank page; turn into a numbered list of sentences. Analyze and make changes. Put back into paragraph form. Replace new and improved paragraph over original paragraph. Do again to another body paragraph.5. Coherence/Cohesiveness Check: (micro perspective)Student wants to make sure there is a logical sequence of ideas within a body paragraph. Student selects a body paragraph. The paragraph is copied onto a blank page. The paragraph is broken down into a numbered list. List is analyzed for logical flow of ideas and for gaps in the flow of ideas. Revise and put back into paragraph form. Replace new and improved paragraph over original paragraph. Do again to another body paragraph.6. Grammar and Mechanics Checklist: Student selects a body paragraph. If more than 2 grammar/mechanical errors are found in the paragraph, student can assume more errors exist in other paragraphs.Check and fix the following or a significant amount of pointswill be deducted from your final essay:Sentence errors: Word errors: Punctuation errors: Fragments; run-ons, commasplices, fused sentencesMisspellings commas Verb tense shifts misuse of homonyms (there,their, they’re)semicolonsPOV shifts Numbers misused apostrophes Subject/Verb do not agree Capitalization quotationsPronoun/Antecedent do not agree (indefinite pronouns)plural
