_______________General DescriptionThe MAX522 contains two 8-bit, buffered, voltage-outputdigital-to-analog converters (DAC A and DAC B) in small8-pin SO and DIP packages. DAC A’s buffer can sourceand sink 5mA, and DAC B’s output can source and sink500µA, both to within 0.5V of ground and VDD. TheMAX522 operates with a single +2.7V to +5.5V supply. The device utilizes a 3-wire serial interface, which oper-ates at clock rates up to 5MHz and is compatible withSPI™, QSPI™, and Microwire™ interface standards. The serial input shift register is 16 bits long and con-sists of eight bits of DAC input data and eight bits forDAC selection and shutdown control. DAC registerscan be loaded independently or in parallel at the posi-tive edge of CS.The MAX522’s ultra-low power consumption and small8-pin SO package make it ideal for portable and bat-tery-powered applications. Supply current is less than1mA and drops below 1µA in shutdown mode. In addi-tion, the reference input is disconnected from the REFpin during shutdown, further reducing the system’s totalpower consumption. The software format is compatiblewith the MAX512/MAX513 triple 8-bit DACs.________________________ApplicationsDigital Gain and Offset AdjustmentProgrammable Current SourceProgrammable Voltage SourcePower-Amp Bias ControlVCO Tuning____________________________Features♦ Operates from a Single +2.7V to +5.5V Supply♦ Dual Buffered Voltage Output♦ Low Power Consumption:1mA Operating Current <1µA Shutdown Current♦ Independently Programmable Shutdown Mode♦ 5MHz, 3-Wire Serial Interface♦ SPI™, QSPI™, and Microwire™ Compatible♦ Space-Saving 8-Pin SO PackageMAX522Dual, 8-Bit, Voltage-Output Serial DAC in 8-Pin SO Package________________________________________________________________Maxim Integrated Products1DACLATCHADAC ADACLATCHBDAC BSCLKOUTAOUTBDIN REFVDDCS16-BIT SHIFT REGISTERCONTROL (8) DATA (8)MAX52283156720.1µF0.1µF(OPTIONAL)0.01µFVOUTAVOUTBGND40.22µF________________Functional DiagramOUTBVDDOUTAGND1287DINREFSCLKCSMAX522TOP VIEW3465DIP/SO__________________Pin ConfigurationCall toll free 1-800-998-8800 for free samples or literature.19-0403; Rev 0; 6/95PART TEMP. Typical values are at TA= +25°C.)Note 1: The outputs may be shorted to VDDor GND if the package power dissipation is not exceeded. Typical short-circuit current toGND is 50mA.Stresses beyond those listed under “Absolute Maximum Ratings” may cause permanent damage to the device. These are stress ratings only, and functionaloperation of the device at these or any other conditions beyond those indicated in the operational sections of the specifications is not implied. Exposure toabsolute maximum rating conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability.VDDto GND ................................................................ -0.3V, +6VDigital Inputs and Outputs to GND............... -0.3V, (VDD+ 0.3V)REF ................................................................-0.3V, (VDD+ 0.3V)OUTA, OUTB (Note 1)............................................................VDDContinuous Power Dissipation (TA= +70°C) Plastic DIP (derate 9.09mW/°C above +70°C) ..............727mWSO (derate 5.88mW/°C above +70°C)...........................471mWOperating Temperature RangesMAX522C_ A.......................................................0°C to +70°CMAX522E_ A....................................................-40°C to +85°CStorage Temperature Range.............................-65°C to +165°CLead Temperature (soldering, 10sec).............................+300°C(Note 3)2.7V ≤ VDD≤ 3.6V, REF = 2.4V 4.5V ≤ VDD≤ 5.5V, REF = 4.096V CONDITIONSMΩ2Reference Input Resistance(shutdown mode)kΩRREFReference Input Resistance 8pF25Reference Input CapacitanceGND VDD%/%0.01PSRRPower-Supply Rejection RatioBits8NResolutionµV/°C100Zero-Code TemperatureCoefficientUNITSMIN TYP MAXSYMBOLPARAMETERGuaranteed monotonic LSB±1DNLDifferential Nonlinearity0.015(Note 2) LSB±1.5INLIntegral Nonlinearity(Note 2) LSB±1TUETotal Unadjusted ErrorReference Input Voltage Range VDAC AµF0.1Capacitive Load at OUT_DAC AΩ50Output ResistanceV0 REFOutput Voltage RangeV(0.7)(VDD)VIHInput High VoltageV(0.3)(VDD)VILInput Low VoltageVIN= 0V or VDDµA0.1 ±10IINInput Current(Notes 4, 5) pF10CINInput CapacitanceDAC BDAC B0.01500STATIC PERFORMANCEREFERENCE INPUTSDAC OUTPUTSDIGITAL INPUTSMAX522Dual, 8-Bit, Voltage-Output Serial DAC in 8-Pin SO Package_______________________________________________________________________________________ 3Note 2: Reduced digital code range (code 24 through code 232) is due to swing limitations of the output amplifiers.
