Writing Assignment 1 Bio 48 - Human PhysiologyOutlineQuestion-ref 1summary-ref 2summaryNameTopicsQuestion 1Question 2Question 3Question 4NameBiology 48 - Human PhysiologyWest Valley CollegeWriting AssignmentA written research paper is a requirement of this course. This assignment will be broken down intothree parts (1) identification of possible topics, (2) preliminary literature research and preparation of anoutline and (3) preparation of the final paper.(1) Identification of Possible Topics:This paper may cover any physiological topic that you find of interest as long as it isnarrowed enough to be covered in detail effectively in a short paper. Start by thinking ofseveral questions you would like answered. For example, you might be curious about theeffects of caffeine. Since caffeine has a significant number of physiological effectsanswering this broad question could quickly become overwhelming. Do some basicresearch (i.e. review your text) to get an overview of the effects produced by caffeine, then use thisinformation to focus your question. Be sure you will be able to emphasize the physiological aspects ofyour topic, what happens, and more importantly how it happens. For example you may now ask “Howdoes caffeine stimulate the nervous system?”or “How does caffeine stimulate the heart?”Provide a single typed page with your name, lab time, and list of topics (each phrased as a question).Prepare 2 copies - one to turn in and one to keep for your records. Before you start writing, you need tosee me for approval of your topics/questions. Usually this just means ensuring that the topic/question isnot too broad, that it is appropriate to the assignment.(2) Preliminary Research and Outline:At this point you are ready to start your literature search. You may still have severalpossible topics that have been approved and that you will need to select from. Start byreferring to your textbook, and learning what you can about each topic. Look for key wordsthat you can use during your literature search. Next do some preliminary literature searchesto see what is available relative to you topic. Before you start your literature search review the libraries basic literature search tutorial. This tutorialwill introduce you how to use ProQuest to search for scholarly articles. Go to the library website(http://www.westvalley.edu/library/ ). Select “Research Guides” then “Learn the Basics of Searching”.Next select “Basics of Searching Databases” and watch the tutorial.Once you have viewed the tutorial, get started. For our purposes I recommend that you utilizeProQuest as your primary search tool. ProQuest can be accessed online from campus or home on thelibrary webpage: http://www.westvalley.edu/library/ (select the “Find Articles” button). Note: when youstart your search be sure to select the “limit search to scholarly journals” checkbox. There are a lot ofsources of information out there, thus there is a lot of information available. Some sources areappropriate, some are not. For this assignment you are required to include at minimum of three peerreviewed research articles and/or review articles found in scholarly research publications such as:Types of Scientific Journals where information may be found (a brief list):American Journal of Physiology Journal of PhysiologyAnnual Review of Pharmacology Journal of NeurophysiologyAnnual Review of Physiology Physiology ReviewsNew England Journal of Medicine NatureJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)Types of Journals / resources that are not acceptable for use as a primary reference in a scientific report:Newspapers Note: most clinic journals (i.e. J. Nursing) will not provideTime / Newsweek or similar the physiological mechanisms needed for your report andOmni / Discover or similar therefore are often not acceptable as a primary reference.Finding articles should not be a problem, however, sifting through them to find articles that will helpyou answer your specific question might be. You will most likely discover that you cannot find adefinitive answer to your question(s) easily in any single article. You will need to consult several articlesto get a complete answer to your question (the broader your question, the more articles you will need toconsult).Writing Assignment 2 Bio 48 - Human PhysiologyTitleName & DatebibliographyAbstract12-3IntroDiscussionConclusionBeware, most of the scientific literature is heavy reading, but you can learn to pick through it withpractice. Don’t wait to start. Read abstracts for an overview to sort through the articles you find. Whenyou find an article that looks promising turn to the body of the article. You will find that you can oftenskip reading the methods sections of most papers and focus on the introduction and discussion sectionsprimarily. Review articles are also a great source of comprehensive information but often are not ascurrent as research articles. Not all articles are available on in full text on ProQuest. If you find a reference to an article that is notfull text or available on ProQuest you may have to visit the reference stacks in a library. Peer reviewedscientific journals can be found in most college libraries (including West Valley, San Jose State, SantaClara, UCSC etc.) and various health and medical libraries in the area. Many articles may also beaccessed online directly from the publisher (see links on the course resources webpage). Note: somepublishers charge a fee to read and print articles - use ProQuest or go to a library instead of paying forthe article. You will need to provide a 1-2 page “Topic Outline” with your name, topic (phrased as a question)and list of preliminary research articles. Include a short summary (1-2 sentences) of each articleindicating what information contained in the article contributes to the answer to your question. You will bebound to this topic once approved, so be sure you have done some preliminary research. Narrowing yourtopic is very important, as is selecting an exciting topic. Prepare 2 copies - one to turn in and one to keepfor your records.(3) Final Paper:Your goal on this assignment is to find at least three peer reviewed articles that provideinformation that directly pertains to your question and provides a step towards answeringthat question (note: your goal is to find as much as is known, even though it may not fullyanswer your question). Once you have found the necessary articles, write a two to threepage
