TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY Fall 2005 ARCH 3501/Peters Date Issued: 08/29/03 Date Due: 09/21/03 DESIGN WITHIN REACH STUDIO Project Statement: “Design Within Reach” (DWR) is a company that sells contem-porary furniture and household items designed by well known architects and furni-ture designers, including works by “modern masters” Mies Van Der Roe, Le Cor-busier, and Marcel Breuer. DWR will soon open a studio showroom in Lubbock to serve the West Texas region. Needless to say, DWR places a high premium on good design, both in the products it sells and the context in which they are dis-played. For the Lubbock studio, they have asked to have created a unique environ-ment, unlike any other, for the display of their products. The architecture should pre-sent a striking image from the street that will provide a strong identity for DWR. Site: The new studio showroom is to be located in downtown Lubbock on Broad-way between Avenue “J” and Avenue “K”. The site is an infill parcel 25’ wide and 115’ deep. It sits between the 3-story, historic Kress Building to the west and a non-descript 1-story commercial building to the east The site is to be considered as cleared and vacant, and enclosed by the walls of the adjacent buildings. Requirements: Each student is to design a front wall, or façade, for the new studio and complete detailed drawings that delineate its foundation, structure, wall assem-blies, glazing systems, doors, windows and frames. The studio’s interior has already been designed. The façade will front a double height display space 24’ high over-looked by a balcony. Above that is a third floor of offices 12’ high that extends to the front façade wall. There may or may not be a parapet that extends above the roof. The front wall of the building may not extend forward of the property line and intrude upon the public right-of-way. Class Goals and Objectives: As always, the primary goal of a design project is to develop a creative design solution which satisfies the functional needs of the program as well as the aesthetic aspirations of a work of architecture. In addition, there are specific goals for this project as follows: SITEGoal: To achieve a detailed level of design beyond the scope of the typical aca-demic design project. Objectives: 1. develop an increased understanding of building materials and their use in the building construction. 2. gain an understanding of building assemblies. 3. use large scale detail drawings in the development of the design. Goal: To develop abilities to use specific architectonic elements to create a strong architectural image. Objectives: 1. apply scale proportion and shape to develop a coherent set of rela tionships and create order in a building elevation. 2. understand the use of color, texture and joints of building materials as design strategies. Presentation Requirements: 1/2 block elevation @ 1/8”=1’-0” Plan @ 1/2” =1’-0” Elevation @ 1/2”=1’-0” Wall Section @ 1/2”=1’-0” Details at connections @ 3”=1’-0” Exterior
