COURSE SYLLABUS Instructor: Michael J. Paterra, [email protected] Course Title: MACROECONOMIC PRINCIPLES - ECN 211 Section Number: 20347 (3 credits) Dates: January 19 – May 9, 2011 Time: M W, 8:30 AM – 9:45 AM Location: GCN A, Room 105 Course Description A descriptive analysis of the structure and functioning of the American economy. Emphasis is on basic institutions and factors that determine national income and employment levels. Consideration is given to the macroeconomic topics of national income, unemployment, inflation, and monetary and fiscal policies. Prerequisites: none. This course satisfies Social and Behavioral Sciences in the MCCD AGEC-A, AGEC-B, and AGEC-S. Recommendations: Eligibility for ENG 101 and Mat 122 Textbook Foundations of Macroeconomics, Robin Bade and Michael Parkin, Addison Wesley, Boston, Mass, Second Custom Edition for Glendale Community College. Attendance Policy 1. Each student is expected to attend all class sessions. More than three absences may result in a lower grade. Three tardy will count as one absence. 2. Class will begin promptly at 8:30 AM. 3. Students should complete the weekly assignments before class and attend class prepared with questions and answers. Course Objectives 1. Define basic terms and concepts such as supply, demand, marginal analysis, and economic systems Work with graphs to express relationships among economic variables 2. Develop a Comprehensive Model of the US Economy in the Global Economy 3. Learn the various theories that have been proposed to achieve desired macroeconomic objectives: full employment, stable prices, and economic growth. 4. Develop a model of the economy for explaining and predicting the consequences of certain economic choices and events. Grading Policy All student final grades will be determined according to the following distribution: 90% Average of exam scores 10% Attendance Final grades will be reported as follows: A (90 -100%), B (89 - 80%), C (79 - 70%), D (69 - 60%), F (below 60%). Students may obtain their final grade by clicking Online Student Services at www.my.maricopa.edu Student Rights and Responsibilities The class will be conducted according to the policies set out in the GCC Student Handbook. Any student may be removed from the classroom for disciplinary reasons as defined in the Student Conduct Code; namely, for any conduct which is harmful, disruptive to or interferes with the educational process.Extra Credit It is possible to add a maximum of 15 points to total test points before averaging by undertaking a one double-spaced 3-5-page report on a microeconomic topic, using 3 cited references. The 3 references must be cited in the body of the paper.
