Le Office Location: Engineering Building, room 307 Telephone: (408) 666-7319 Fax: (408) 924-3925 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Lab Day/Time: Tuesday, 09:00-11:45 Labroom: Engineering Building, room 307 Prerequisites: EE118 with grade C or better Course Description EE120 Laboratory is part of the EE120 course. Students taking EE120 are required to register for one lecture section and one laboratory section. At the end of the semester, laboratory work will be integrated with the lecture one to determine EE120 course grade. There will be no grade/pass/non-pass for the laboratory but students must complete the laboratory in order to complete EE120 course. − Use of the DEBUG software tool for the PC to explore microprocessor architecture, addressing modes, instruction set, PC memory, I/O, display system, and interrupt system. − Write simple assembly/machine language programs using DEBUG software tool. − Develop assembly language program using text editor and assembly compiler. − Perform timing analysis of microprocessor signals and microcomputer bus cycles using logic analyzer. − Explore, design, and implement interfacing and simple circuits Required Lab Manual Lab Manual to Accompany the 8088 and 8086 Microprocessors: Programming, Interfacing, Software, Hardware, and Applications (4th Edition), Walter A. Triebel and Avtar Singh, ISBN: 0-13-045231-9, Prentice Hall, 2003 Laboratory Protocol, Assignments and Grading Policy Lab Computers, Directories, Diskettes, and FilesEE120-Lab Section 2 Microprocessor-Based System Design Spring 2009 Do not consume food in the laboratory Page 2 of 5 − Each student is required to carry a floppy disk to the lab for his/her own use. − If your computer starts in “WINDOW” mode, you must run “Command Prompt” utility to get into “DOS” mode to start the labs (Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt) − The three main directories that contain data, programs, and software for this course are: C:\EE120Lab>: Contains source programs and data from the CDROM accompanied with the laboratory manual C:\MASM>: Contains MASM compiler (assembly compiler) C:\PCULab>: Contains PCuLab diagnostic program − Do NOT work directly on the above directories since mistakes can damage the files. − Do NOT work directly on directory C:\> since mistakes can damage the system. − Students must work directly on floppy drive. If students prefer to work on drive C:\>, please create a temporary directory (C:\TEMP>) and work on this directory. Laboratory Exercise Reports Each laboratory exercise report will consist of a lab or a set of labs as shown under the laboratory schedule at the end of this syllabus. The laboratory exercise report requirements will be described in the class. Each laboratory exercise report must be turned in as scheduled and during the first 10 minutes of the lab section. Students may be asked to demonstrate their lab exercises anytime so please make sure that data and programs are always available. Laboratory exercise reports must be hand-written only and each student is responsible for individual laboratory exercise reports. Late reports will not be accepted. Final Project Report and Demo The final project report must be prepared neatly and professionally. The technical contents, format, completeness, and appearance of the report all contribute to the report's grade. Students are responsible to include all requested and necessary information in your reports. The report must have sections in order as listed below. Each section must start with the new page. - A cover page which includes course number, instructor name, student name, semester, project title, and the due date. - An "Introduction" section to introduce the project to the readers. - A "Summary and Conclusion" section to emphasize the most important results and information of the entire project. - The main body of the report, which includes many sub-sections such as experiment setup, list of instruments and/or equipments, block and/or circuit diagrams, data output, graphs, program flowcharts, program sources, discussion, analysis, answers to additional questions, etc. - A "References" section to list all references. Reference numbers must be cited in the text with square brackets such as [#]. - An "Appendices" section to attach any documents, copies, etc. that support your report. Note that each section must start on the new page. Figures and tables must be labeled separately and clearly. Reports must be condensed but completed, clear, firm, and prepared with care. Students perform the experiment in groups but must turn-in their own individual reports. Please keep in mind that report will be graded for its technical contents, format, completeness,EE120-Lab Section 2 Microprocessor-Based System Design Spring 2009 Do not consume food in the laboratory Page 3 of 5 and appearance. Please note that all group members must show-up in order to turn-in and demo their final projects Laboratory Grading The total lab score makes-up 25% of the EE120 course grade and the total lecture score makes-up the remaining 75% of the EE120 course grade. The total lab score is broken into sub-scores as listed below: One laboratory midterm exam: 15% One laboratory final project with report and demo: 35% Five (5) laboratory exercises with reports & demos: 50% Laboratory Examination and Project Schedule − Laboratory midterm exam: Week #8 − Final project demonstration and report: Week #15 University Policies on Academic integrity Students should know that the University’s Academic Integrity Policy is availabe at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/download/judicial_affairs/Academic_Integrity_Policy_S07-2.pdf.
