You will need the following: 1. Text The textbook for this course is Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions, 10/ed., by Adler and Elmhorst 2. Forms from the course website in Blackboard – as needed 3. One audiotape 4. Paper and pen/pencil 5. Materials for sensory aids of your choice Tests : Each test will examine the information covered in class. You need to be present in order to take notes in class. I will not give you copies of powerpoints or lecture notes. The final exam is required for all students. Speeches : Speeches will be assigned 1) based on volunteers and 2) by random draw. When speeches are assigned in class, I will ask for volunteers for the first speech day. After all volunteers are considered, the remaining students will be randomly assigned to a speech day. The speech schedule will be posted in the classroom and on Blackboard. If you are not present or not prepared on your assigned speech day, then you will receive a zero for your speech. All outlines, presentation aids, and speech materials are due at the time of your speech. Other Assignments : All assignments for this class should be typed including speech outlines. Participation : Participation points come from several areas including speech days, outlines, evaluations, and class activities. You must be present and attentive for all speeches on a speech day to receive participation points. Failure to submit any major assignment (as defined by the instructor) may result in a failing grade for the course.Attendance/Make-Up Work - This a communication course; therefore, it is essential that you attend class to engage in class discussions, participate as an audience member, and improve your communication skills. - Roll will be taken at every class meeting. It is your responsibility to sign the roll sheet every class day. Excused or unexcused, you are allowed 4 absences. Your grade will be lowered one letter grade (100 points) with each additional absence. You will be dropped from the course if you have 7 or more absences. Students with no absences at the end of the semester will earn 10 bonus points on their final exams. - You may not make-up missed assignments after the due date and late work is not accepted. You may, however, arrange to perform work (tests or speeches) early if you know you will be absent on a speech/test day. Class Disruptions - Please turn off all cell phones and pagers before coming to class. Failure to do so will result in a grade deduction within your participation points. - Do not bring hats or gum to class on speech days. Obviously, the nature of those items will interfere with your performance. - On speech days all audience members must be focused on the presentation in order to receive participation points. You may not work on other class work or engage in other activities on speech days.
