English 1010-004/016: Expository WritingMs. Cristy HallEssay Assignment #2: “I Told You So!: Argumentation Through Letter Writing”Introductory Remarks:In our modern age, new forms of online communication (i.e. email, chat sessions, and blogging) have virtually replaced old-fashioned snail mail, branding it as an archaic form of expression thatis rarely practiced. Still, the process of thinking through a letter from start to finish offers a valuable means of persuasion. Through personal correspondence with family or friends, we can resolve arguments, ask or offer advice, or simply vent our frustrations. In addition, the letter provides a unique space--a kind of open forum--in which we can freely voice our opinions perhaps with less fear of judgment, because the time and energy we invest in composing a letter is usually reserved for someone we care deeply about. In fact, one of the most fascinating functions of letters is that they help to bridge distance. Old-fashioned snail-mail, particularly as it is becoming more and more of a rarity, usually is sent out to loved ones across the miles. However, letters can also be an appropriate way to communicate with those in our closest circle. Everyday, as we are exposed to new experiences, we grow and change so rapidly that even those we spend the most time with cannot always keep pace. Can you remember the last time you were accused of “acting out of character” by someone who you thought understood you? Not only does composing a letter offer you the chance to argue your position, but it also gives you a valuable opportunity to practice “internal revision”– the process of carefully and purposefully re-positioning yourself inside a conflict or misunderstanding with the specific goal of reassessing your past actions in light of your new experiences. Assignment:For this assignment, you are asked to think of a future plan/goal that you have that someone close to you disagrees with. Be careful to select someone whose ideas and opinions you respect even though your opinions differ. Perhaps your mom (who always envisioned that you’d carry onthe family business) is shocked by your recent decision to major in theater and move to New York. You no longer need her permission, but you still desire to have her support. Whatever the nature of the disagreement, it needs to matter to you that the other person does not accept your wishes because only then will you will be driven to offer a convincing argument. If you cannot think of a future plan, you might just consider something about you (a belief or value you hold, the major you have chosen, or a relationship you’re in) that someone you care about opposes. Begin by typing up a list of all of their major objections.(Include this list on the cover page that you attach to the front of your essay). Using this list, you will then compose a letter in which you attempt to persuade the reader to adopt your opinion (or at least consider your viewpoint). Be sure to carefully consider each of the objections you list and react and respond to them appropriately.Extra Pointer:As you write, remember that YOU know your audience better than I do. Think about their specific personality, the way they have reacted to you in the past, etc. and choose rational, emotional, and ethical appeals that are appropriate to your cause. Example: Perhaps your mom has a soft spot when it comes to recollecting childhood memories. Your story about the time you forgot your lines in your third grade play might be just the attention-getter you need to sell your plan about a New York acting career. Use that strategy to your advantage! On the other hand, maybe your dad is more practical and direct. In this case, you’ll need to get straight to the point! Skip the tear-jerker and tell him loud and clear how a young, struggling actor/actress is going to pay the bills so far from home. Naturally, I should be able to easily see the kind of relationship the two of you have by the way you approach your audience. Be as creative and humorous as you wish (but please keep in mind that your job is also to write an intelligent college-level essay that is thoughtful, mature, and sophisticated.) The most challenging part of this assignment, undoubtedly, will be finding a way to eloquently achieve this balance.Format and Due Date: As always, your essay should be FOUR PAGES, typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 10 or 12 point font, and include a creative title. Your final draft is due on Fri. Mar. 2 at the beginning of class. Have fun with this, and let me know if you have any
