If you choose an archaeological topic, I would like you to try to locate the most up-to-date information: for example, if you are interested in the human remains from Pompeii, look for recent articles on that topic. Two good places to find such information are National Geographic magazine, and Archaeology magazine (both available in the library). For art topics, a good place to begin is the Encyclopedia of Art, located in the reference section of the library. Format. The paper is to be 7-10 pages long, double-spaced, with foot- or endnotes and a bibliography (see examples below). You are to have at least three library sources, not including encyclopedias and general works or the internet. All of the above may be used, and must of course be referenced, but they cannot be included in the three sources. Valid sources would be books or journal articles. References. What needs a footnote? a. Information - any facts that are not general knowledge b. Ideas taken from your sources c. Quotations You don't need to have a footnote at the end of every sentence, however. For example if you are discussing Egyptian history and all of your information comes from one or two sources, just put a footnote at the end of that paragraph. A footnote may have more than one reference in it. References in the text may be given in two forms in a research paper, footnotes or endnotes. Footnotes are located at the bottom of each page, and endnotes are located at the end of the paper. Both are numbered sequentially, starting with 1, and are not repeated. If your footnote 5 uses the same source as footnote 2, for example, just use a shortened version of the original footnote (P. Brown, p. 32). A separate bibliography page is required. This comes after the endnote page, and its format is different. It is alphabetical by author's last name, and is not numbered. Page numbers are not used for books in the bibliography, but they are needed for journals with multiple articles (give page numbers for entire article).
