Students will learn the history and use of essential oils, and howthey interact with body chemistry affecting organs and organ systems. They will come to understandthat essential oils interact pharmacologically, physiologically, and psychologically with the human body.Students will be educated in the indications and contraindication, and the scope of practice associatedwith the use of essential oils.Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:1. discuss the history of the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes;2. explain the extraction process and the need for purity of essential oils; and3. discuss and identify various oils and their uses in massage therapy.Measurable Course Performance Objectives (MPOs): Upon successful completion of this course,students should specifically be able to do the following:1. A rubric is used toevaluate the research paper for the performance of course objectives. The criteria or standard followedis that of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Essex must complywith these standards to apply for and secure national certification for the Massage Therapy Program.Course Requirements: All students are required to: 1. Maintain regular attendance.2. Take part in class discussions. 3. Take all tests and complete the research paper as scheduled.4. Participate in all clinical demonstrations and hands-on evaluations.Methods of Evaluation: Final course grades will be computed as follows: % of Grading Components final course grade- 1 or more Test (date specified by the instructor) 75%page 2prepared by C Donaldson, Fall 2010The test will show evidence of the extent to whichstudents have met course objectives.- 1 Research Paper 25%The research paper should be written on the variousmethods of extraction of essential oils and will showevidence of student mastery of Course Goal 2.Academic Integrity: Dishonesty disrupts the search for truth that is inherent in the learning process andso devalues the purpose and the mission of the College. Academic dishonesty includes, but is notlimited to, the following:- plagiarism – the failure to acknowledge another writer’s words or ideas or to give proper creditto sources of information;- cheating – knowingly obtaining or giving unauthorized information on any test/exam or anyother academic assignment;- interference – any interruption of the academic process that prevents others from the properengagement in learning or teaching; and- fraud – any act or instance of willful deceit or trickery.Violations of academic integrity will be dealt with by imposing appropriate sanctions.
