Most doctor’s offices close at noon on Fridays. The three hour block of time, which by Administrative rules at SPC must be made available for office hours that almost no student will ever come to since classes no longer meet on the Levelland Campus on Fridays, should be viewed by students as tentative. I will try to keep students informed about those few Fridays during the semester when I do not have doctor’s appointments, lab tests, or other joyous medical procedures. The best way to contact me (and almost all instructors in this information age) is via email. Required Texts: The Longman Reader (8th, brief edition), Policy Statement and Course Calendar You are provided with ONE copy of this Policy Statement and Course Calendar. If you lose either document, you are still responsible for the information contained in both documents. It is also your responsibility to secure a new copy by either downloading a copy from MYSPC or borrowing the needed document from a classmate for photocopying. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the assignments in the course calendar. Scope/Purpose/Requirements/Instructional Objectives By the end of English 1301, the student should have written a minimum of six 500-word essays that reflect the ability: to understand writing as a process: that is, writing conceived as a connected and interactive process which includes prewriting, writing, and revision; to apply the principles of writing as a process and the analysis of audience and purpose to writing assignments; to write an essay that follows the principles of unity and coherence and that is appropriately developed to prove a thesis by means of narration, description, illustration, definition, process analysis, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, classification and division, argumentation, and/or persuasion; to write an essay in standard English, the criteria for standard English being those described in the current required handbook; to understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking in the development of exposition and argument. Methods of Evaluation Student work is evaluated on a Percentage scale. To calculate points earned for an assignment, the available points for an assignment are multiplied by the percentage grade. Overall grade in class is based on earning percentage of available points. Essay evaluation is based on form and content (100 points for form and 100 for content). 80/20 rule ALL OF YOUR ESSAYS MUST BE WRITTEN BY YOU. YOU CAN USE PROPERLY CITED OUTSIDE SOURCES TO SUPPORT YOUR THESIS, BUT 80 % OF THE ESSAY MUST BE YOUR WORDS AND IDEAS. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA OR ANY SIMILAR SOURCE. DO NOT USE CHEATNOTE SITES. To earn final exam exemption To earn a final exam exemption (trust me, you want to be exempt), you must maintain exemption points that are equal to or greater than zero. Exemption points are accrued thus: A average +4, B average +3, C average +2, D average 0, F average -1, Absence -1, No late work +1 A student who maintains a B average earns +3, is absent 4 times earns -4, turns in all her work on time earns +1, manages to be exempt as 3 – 4 + 1 = 0. Some General Notes on Format for Assignments All papers must be typed, double-spaced, use Times New Roman font 12. Use no folders, or report covers. All assignments must include the following information at the top of the first page: Name, Assignment, Class, Class Time and Days, Date, Title. Skip one space after title and start Paragraph one.1302 Calendar Monday/Wednesday Example: Bilbo Baggins 1301-027 9:30 TTH Narrative Essay (Rough Draft) January 15, 2007 There and Back Again: an Insider Reveals the Real Story Failure to follow this simple model, assignments that lack a proper heading will receive a 10 % point reduction in value. You are responsible for picking your own topic for each essay. Each essay will be detailed in a one-page guide for the assignment. At the end of each assignment guide, you will find a list of topics to be avoided. If you ignore this list of unavailable topics, your essay will be returned unmarked, with a grade of ZERO. Absence Policy 1. Upon accruing 2 weeks worth of absences, students can (and in most circumstances will) be dropped from the course with a grade of “F.” 2. Three (3) times tardy or leaving early or a combination of the two equals one absence. a. if you miss half of a class, you are absent. 3.
