W. Garland, J. W. Nibler, and D. P. Shoemaker Overview CHEM 3520 is the second semester of the two-semester, calculus-based Physical Chemistry sequence designed for students desiring a B.S. degree in Chemistry (ACS accredited) or Chemical Engineering. The class is not however limited to these students. The course will mainly cover a number of topics of thermodynamics and kinetics. A sound mathematical background is important for the success in this class but will not be emphasized in exams. The class includes also a laboratory component that involves a weekly, 3-hour section on Tuesdays. A systematic set of experiments performed in the lab covering various topics of thermodynamics and kinetics complement the material presented in the class. Objectives Through classroom lectures, assigned reading from the textbook, and the laboratory work the students are expected to advance the ability to interpret and reason with chemical concepts, laws, and theories. Having completed the class, a student should be able to: – understand and use basic physical chemistry language – identify and discuss factors influencing thermodynamics and kinetics properties – apply physical chemistry principles and laws to problems or issues of a chemical nature – critically interpret and reason physical chemistry data Web Site http://iweb.tntech.edu/albu/teaching/CHEM3520-S07/index.htm Attendance Each student is expected to attend all lectures at the scheduled times. Quiz points or information missed during (unexcused) absences cannot be reclaimed. Office Hours I will be available Mondays and Wednesdays morning after class (9:00 am). If you have conflicts with this time, stop by my office anytime you will see my office door open (and nobody else in).CHEM 3520 Spring 2007 Grading Your course grade will be computed as follows: – Final Exam – Highest-Scored Hour Exam – Second Highest-Scored Hour Exam – Lowest-scored Hour Exam – Homework – Laboratory 25 %20 %15 %10 %5 %25 % Your letter grade will be determined according to the following scale: F → 55 → D → 65 → C → 75 → B → 85 → A → 100 Hour Exams There will be three one-hour exams. All of them will be included in your class grade but the highest-scored one will be considered to a greater extend than the lowest-scored one (20% vs. 10%). There is NO MAKEUP for the hour exams. *** There might be some additional assignments, class pop-quizzes, or attendance quizzes that will be added to the hour exam grade (as extra credit) or considered in the homework grade. Final Exam The final exam is comprehensive over the material covered in this semester and will be given on Thursday May 3, 2006 between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. There is NO MAKEUP for the final exam. Homework Homework will be assigned regularly, collected and graded. It will be constituted mostly from exercises and problems from your textbook. Students with Disability Students with a disability requiring accommodations should contact the Office of Disability Services. An Accommodation Request should be completed as soon as possible, preferably by the end of the first week of the course. The Office of Disability Services is located in the Roaden University Center, Room 112 (phone 372-6119). Academic Dishonesty Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited, and students involved in academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly as a participant or abettor, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class, who has the authority to assign an “F” or a zero for the exercise or examination, or to assign an “F” for the course. In addition, the instructor may temporarily exclude a student involved in academic misconduct, but should provide for the student who may make a successful appeal. [The instructor has the primary responsibility for control over classroom behavior and maintenance of academic integrity, can order the temporary removal or exclusion from the classroom of any student engaged in disruptive conduct or conduct violative of the general rules and regulations of the institution.
