Gill, Ph.D. Spring, 2009 417.268-1075 (voice mail) M 8:15-10:15, W (Study Group), F 9:00-10:151 [email protected] COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION A continuation of first-year Greek, culminating in the student‟s first exposure to the Greek New Testament (GNT). Translation is done in the Epistles of John. Prerequisite: BGR 530. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Reproduce by memory grammatical paradigms; 2. Pronounce and identify meanings of vocabulary words appearing 50 times or more in the GNT; 3. Analyze and translate exercise worksheets; 4. Read and exegete the Epistles of John; and 5. Evaluate New Testament (NT) biblical and theological issues from the original language. REQUIRED MATERIALS 1. Gill, D. M., ed. Translation and Exegesis Notebook for the Epistles of John. Springfield, MO: Grace & Truth, 2007. 2. Kubo, Sakae. A Reader’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and a Beginner’s Guide for the Translation of New Testament Greek. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1975. OPTIONAL MATERIALS 1 The students will watch the two-hour DVD’s covering the respective unit on Mondays and take scheduled quizzes on Fridays. They should plan to meet with their study groups once each week (whatever the day), and note it on the attendance roster when they sign it on Friday. When the professor is in town, she will come to class on Wednesdays to translate and drill with the students.Spring „09 NT Greek 1B Syllabus 2 D. M. Gill 1. Gill, Deborah M. Complete the final third of the textbook (Machen, New Testament Greek for Beginners, 2nd ed.) the first half of the term. 2. Translate and exegete the Epistles of John, the second half. METHODOLOGY 1. The same kind of interactive lectures and lab drills, exercise worksheets with answers, and quizzes and exams as in Greek 1A, at times with the professor in person and at other times on DVD.2 2. Weekly participation in a NT Greek Study Group of the student‟s design to drill concepts and assist with homework. 3. Demonstration of mastery of vocabulary appearing in the Epistles of John on two vocabulary quizzes. 4. Personally completing a neat and accurate Translation and Exegesis Notebook on the Epistles of John. 5. Translating (in advance) and reading by sight and answering grammatical and exegetical questions in the First Epistle of John, both in class and on the Final Examination. REQUIREMENTS 1. Participation for the first 8 weeks of the semester in the Greek Usage Online Forum. Students must make 5 original posts about things they either discovered or questions that arose during their personal study in the GNT while using it in chapel, church, and personal devotions. Students must makes 3 posts interacting with other students‟ discoveries or questions. These responses may be answers to, further observations on, or further questions based on the other students‟ questions. (Note, posts are not to be a journal regarding students‟ progress, e.g., “I‟m recognizing more words … . This was a hard week in class. … I like the Greek grammar songs.”) Posts, whether original comments or responses to others‟ comments, should be between 100 and 200 words each. (Note, enter Greek words using proper rules of English transliteration!) 2. Personally completing a neat and accurate Translation and Exegesis Notebook on the Epistles of John. All of 1 John, chs. 1-4 are required, any part of ch. 5, 2 or 3 2 The Machen textbook has been revised since the DVD’s were originally recorded; and the Course Manual has been revised accordingly. Therefore, whenever the DVD’s and the Course Manual differ, the student should follow the Course Manual. Remember to begin each unit’s study with the respective Study Guide (§1 in the Course Manual). The Study Guides alert the student to any significant revisions.Spring „09 NT Greek 1B Syllabus 3 D. M. Gill John translated counts as extra credit at 1/5 point per verse. The Translation and Exegesis Notebook is due at the time of the Translation (Final) Examination. 3. Successful performance on unit quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, and comprehensive examinations on paradigms and vocabulary, and translation and exegesis (final) on the First Epistle of John. (Practice exams on paradigms and vocabulary are optional and earn the student extra credit points, based one-fourth of the percentage score.) • No late quizzes are permitted, but the lowest score on one quiz will be dropped. • Late exams are not permitted, nor are grades of “Incomplete” granted. 4. To benefit future generations of Greek students, students may choose to develop a digital learning resource (as individuals, or part of a small group) for up to 40 bonus points. Clear your project with the professor. 5. 83% accuracy, a grade of B, is the expected acceptable performance to continue in the Greek sequence.
