In most cases I will only email responses to Blackboard email unless you are unable to access that system for some reason. Make sure you do the BROWSER CHECK and Update Java on your computer BEFORE starting the course. BOOKMARK BLACKBOARD LOG-IN PAGE NOW! The server for Blackboard is not at SPC and is not impacted if or when SPC goes down. For that reason, students need to bookmark the Blackboard log-in page and use that to connect to the course. This prevents confusion if SPC server and website is having “issues” and is down. Complete Course Requirements begin on PAGE 5 but please ALL pages before beginning course. Outside email (to be used ONLY before class begins or if Blackboard is unavailable and it is an emergency): [email protected] Log In to Blackboard from the South Plains College homepage on the FIRST day of classes. Once the class begins, ALL email is completed WITHIN the BLACKBOARD system and not by outside email. Course Description: This course is a study of human behavior by placing it within a broader social context. Specifically how groups influence people and especially how people are influenced by their society. Goals/Objectives: Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Apply and recognize the sociological perspective to social experiences in areas related to social class, gender, age, sexual orientation, and religion. 2. Distinguish among sociological methods and interpret the scientific methods. 3. Compare and contrast between the three major theories: structural functional, social conflict and symbolic interaction. 4. Identify and recognize among various components of social structure and social institutions. 5. Evaluate elements of applying sociological concepts to real life experiences.2 | P a g e Computer Requirements: The first requirement is that the student has access to a computer with a reliable Internet connection. I do not recommend any particular brand of computer. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that they have the necessary computer resources and skills to take this class. Students need the following basic skills: Typing skills and basic word processing skills Know basic functionality of a computer and how to do basic troubleshooting Know how to connect and search the Internet Do BROWSER CHECK ON BLACKBOARD USE INTERNET EXPLORER Know how to compose, reply, and forward e-mail messages within Blackboard system Basic computer troubleshooting skills The Blackboard software used to manage this online course tracks student logins, tracking when and where the student has been in the course. Accessing this course on a regular basis is extremely important in order to meet the objectives of this course. You will feel more at ease with the materials if you stay in touch with what is going on. (see attendance requirements) NOTICE: If you choose to wait until the last minute to work on your assignments and/or quizzes and you click submit and get a message that submission was denied because the time is after 12:00 PM (that is NOON not midnight) the consequences will be subject to the above grading policy for assignments and on quizzes you will receive a zero. WORK ahead on deadlines- You can work ahead on quizzes, assignment, semester paper BUT not discussions or final exam.
