Instructor: Moehrle, Theresa Office: LS 519Office Hrs: Tuesday 3:30-4:30 or by appointmentEmail: [email protected]: Effective Human Relations: A Guide to People at Work, (2000). Seta, Paulus, & Baron, 4th EditionCourse Description & GoalsThis course is designed to provide students with knowledge of the processes involved in effective functioning in the workplace. Topics will include social perception, motivation, personality and its impact on the workplace, persuasion, interpersonal relationships, prejudice, discrimination, leadership, and stress.Upon completion of this course, students will have a fundamental knowledge of the theories and research that deal with individual behavior in work environments and should understand how one can apply such knowledge to attain organizational and individual goals. Additionally, students will be able to apply psychological principles to their everyday lives.Attendance & Participation Class attendance is vital to grasping course content. As a result, attendance is required. Students who have emergencies arise and have to miss class are required to provide university-approved documentation to excuse their absence(s). Students will earn a total of 25 points for attendance by beingpresent in class on the five unannounced days I take attendance. If students are absent from class, they are required to find out what they missed from another student before the next class period. I encourage students to exchange emails and phone numbers with at least two other students the first day of class.Regarding punctuality, students need to be on time to class as they will miss important announcements and discussions and will be held responsible for any material and announcements covered in class. Be courteous, be on time, and do not socialize during class. Socializing in class is disruptive to other students and to me.Also, research has clearly demonstrated that those students who are involved in the learning process aremore likely to retain information and have greater success in class than those who do not. Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and respect other students’ opinions and contributions, regardless of whether these beliefs are contrary to their own beliefs. Drop Policy No grade will be assigned if students drop before the census date, January 31, 2007. Until March 30, 2007, students may drop the course with a grade of “W.” Important Dates for Spring 20071-31 Census Date3-12 to 3-18 Spring Break3-30 Last Day to Drop with Automatic “W”5-4 Last Day of ClassFinal Exam – 5-18 Grades Available Online PSYC 3301 Human Relations Syllabus – Instructor: Colette Jacquot Page 1PSYC 3301 Human Relations Syllabus – Instructor: Colette Jacquot Page 2ExaminationsStudents will take three non-comprehensive examinations and a non-comprehensive final examination. Exams will cover text material as well as material presented via class lectures, audio/visual media, exercises, guest speakers’ presentations, class discussions, and/or handouts. On examination days, students will NOT be permitted to wear ball caps or any other head covering that prevents my seeing their eyes.Students who wish to find out what questions they missed on examinations may meet with me in my office up to one week after the examination. In the event students wish to dispute their exam grades, they may do so in my office for one week only after that examination. However, once the week after the exam has passed, examination grades will be undisputable. Tardy or Absent on Exam DayIf students are tardy the day of an examination, they will not be permitted to take the exam if any class member has already turned in a completed exam. If students miss an examination due to a university-approved absence of which they provide written approval to me, they will be given an essay exam as a make-up test and will be required to make the exam up before the next class of the missed examination at a time approved by the instructor (not during class time). If students miss an examination due to unapproved reasons per UTA’s absence policy, they will not be able to make up the examination and will receive a zero on the examination missed.PaperA career development paper is due the first five minutes of class on April 23, 2007. This paper is worth 75 points and will be combined with the 25 possible attendance points; both grades will be averaged as one exam grade. More specific instructions for this paper will be given at a later date.Extra CreditStudents may receive half a point added to their final grades by researching a question raised in class per the instructor’s approval. Students will present the research results to the class orally the next class hour and will turn in a one-page summary of the research to the instructor that day as well. A total of two points added to the final grade may be earned in extra credit per semester. I may also provide exercises that students may turn in for extra credit. Grade DistributionThe three exams and final exam will be computed based on the percentage of correct questions answered: 90-100% = A, 80-90% = B, 70-80% = C, 60-70% = D and 0-59% = F. The career-goals paper grade and attendance points will be added together to count as one exam grade. Thus, students will have five exam grades (3 exams, 1 final, and 1 paper/attendance) which will be averaged for the final grade. CommunicationFor anyone having a difficult time comprehending reading material or any other course content, please meet with me. I also welcome student feedback and suggestions as to ways to improve this course.Beepers & Cell PhonesPlease turn off all pagers, beepers, and cell phones during class as these devices are disruptive to other students and to me.Email ProtocolWhen sending an email to me, please put the class name in the subject line of the email. Inside the emailinclude your full name. I will do my best to respond to messages via email in a prompt manner; however, please realize that I do not always have access to a computer.
