Washington, DC Course Description: This course covers the history, philosophy, functions, management, and operation of comprehensive school counseling programs in elementary and secondary schools with emphasis on the role of the professional school counselor.Standards: In this course, students will learn about the role and responsibilities of the counselor in the context of the school and community as well as the foundations of guidance program development that will facilitate their students to develop and participate in guidance programs that are aligned to National Standards for School Counseling Programs of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Counselors must develop programs and activities that enable their students to develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills that contribute to their effective learning through the life span (1.1). Counselors must be able to assist students in making choices from a wide range of post secondary opportunities (1.2), to understand the relationship of education to work, life, and the community (1.3), to develop skills and attitudes to make a transition from school to work (2), develop strategies to achieve goals (2.3), acquire attitudes, knowledge, and interpersonal skills to understand and respect others (3.1), make decisions, set goals and take appropriate action to achieve goals (3.2), and apply life skills that contribute to a safe and healthy environment (3.3). Each of the course objectives are also benchmarked to various standards for school counseling programs. ASCA indicates the standards of the American School Counselor Association. INTASC indicates the principles of the Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium. In addition, standards cited that related to the standards of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) are indicated with as asterisk (*). Course Objectives: The course provides an overview of the entire field of guidance and counseling. As such, it addresses, in some way, all ASCA (American School Counselor Association) standards and INTASC (Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium) principles. The student will be able to: 1. Describe the history, philosophy, and current trends in education and school guidance and counseling. * (ASCA 1.1, 1.3) (INTASC 1, 9) 2. Describe the role, function, and professional identity of a school counselor in relation to other school personnel. * (ASCA 1.3m 2.3) 3. Demonstrate knowledge of school organizations, the pre-K through 12 curriculum and the relationship of a school counseling program to the academic and student services in schools. * (ASCA 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) (INTASC 1, 4, 7 8)4. Demonstrate knowledge of and how to contact state and national professional counseling organizations. * (INTASC 10) 5. Be familiar with the current American Counseling Association Code of Ethics and the current major policy, legal, and ethical issues pertinent to the school counselor. * (INTASC 9, 10) 6. Describe the impact of diversity on school counseling, including age, gender, sexual orientation, religious and spiritual beliefs, racial, ethnic and cultural heritage, etc. * (ASCA 3.1) (INTASC 3) 7. Begin development of a systems perspective. * (INTASC 7, 9) 8. Be aware of the current problems and issues confronting school counselors, including opportunities and barriers to student academic, career, and personal/social development.( (All ASCA standards) (INTASC 2, 5, 6, 9) 9. Understand the role of developmental guidance in the school setting and the role of the counselor as a developmental guidance specialist. (All ASCA standards) (INTASC 1, 9) 10. Demonstrate ways to directly involve teachers and parents in guidance activities. * (ASCA 1.3) (INTASC 10) 11. Understand the core elements that facilitate counseling. ( * (INTASC 1) 12. Understand the fundamentals of both individual and small group counseling. * (INTASC 1-9) 13. Understand the dynamics of peer facilitated programs. * (ASCA 3.1) ( (INTASC 6) 14. Understand consultation, coordination, collaboration, referral, and team building. * (INTASC 10) 15. Understand the counselor’s role in assessing students. * (INTASC 8) 16. Understand the counselor’s role in leadership as well as advocacy for students and programs. * (INTASC 9, 10) 17. Identify methods to develop, implement, and evaluate developmental guidance programs. * (INTASC 1,6) 18. Understand the emerging role of technology in the school setting. * (INTASC 4) Assessment of Objectives: All course objectives, 1-18, are assessed by the midterm/final exams, two written assignments, and the term paper and presentation.Calendar of Assignments: Prior to Meeting 1, January 29, 2010: Read chapters 1-6 in School Counseling for the Twenty-first Century. Choose any one of the suggested activities at the end of each chapter and respond to it. Be prepared to lead a discussion on that topic with the rest of the class during the weekend. Each student will prepare discussion on a total of 6 activities—one from each chapter—for use throughout the weekend. Topics to be covered (Part 1): *Emergence of the school counseling profession *Developing, implementing and evaluating a balanced school counseling program *Legal and ethical responsibilities in school counseling *Prevention and crisis intervention programming *Counseling in schools *Consulting in school counseling Prior to February 19, 2010: Read chapters 7-12 in School Counseling for the Twenty-first Century.
